As an FO you can go anywhere, especially Portugal, but also France and Italy, within 1 year, easily.

Hi All,

I am a Australian CASA ATPL-A (FO jet time >50t, multi crew exp PIC in turbo props, 5000 hours total). I dont have a CAA or EASA license.......yet..... Coming hiome to spend time with my elderly mother.

I have applied for the DEFO NTR position as advertised on their website. I am a UK citizen.

What are my chances of being successful re the license not being CAA or EASA. Will EasyJet let me fly for 12 months using the exemption for third-party license conversions? Has anyone heard of this being done. So yes, I will need to complete the 14 ATPL exams, a flight test and a medical within the 12 month exemption period.

Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Negative, you need a CAA license by the time you start

No. Absolutely zero chance unless you have a CAA licence.

Hi i'm similar to you, I tried many airlines asking about the 12 months temporary licence and that didn't get me anywhere. I had a NZ ATPL and Aus ATPL. I did the 13 UK ATPL exams (Closest place to sit them if you want to study from home in AUS is in Malaysia at the aviation academy, Study using ATPLQ and Bristol ground school.) The exams suck and are frustrating. I then did the UK Medical and the ATPL FCL fight test in the A320 sim at Gatwick. It took me roughly 7 months all up & cost about 17K Aussie. I only have the UK CAA ATPL but there seems to be enough work out there atm I hope. If it's something you are looking to do then message me i'm happy to help if I can.

Sorry to come across negatively but you are saying you did a CAA medical, all 14 exams in Malaysia (flying from Oz at least 3 times and paying the CAA fee for each exam) plus the cost of Bristol ground school plus the flight to UK plus rental of a 737 SIM at Gatwick plus the price for a CAA examiner all for 9000 British pounds?????

I am a little sceptical please break it down for me

Yeah reasonable to be sceptical, It helped me a lot having standby staff travel to make the flying much cheaper. For the ICAO conversion you "only" have to 13 Exams as KSA is not required. 100 pounds per exam - so 1300 pounds on exams. BGS software was 650 pounds, but honestly I would recommend just try with ATPLQ only. Class 1 medical 500 pounds. Sim test with examiner and crew member 1300 pounds. That's 3750 pounds, The rest is flights and accommodations / food and then actual licence processing fees. Malaysia is extremely affordable especially near Sepang. I was fortunate with having staff travel flights. Flying to the UK and the accommodation there is expensive.

My point really is that its extremely time consuming and financially draining to convert from an ICAO ATPL. The CAA and airlines want foreign pilots to do the full conversion.

Thank you for the detailed break down one question.
Sim test with examiner and crew member 1300 pounds
Are you saying the SIM was included in the 1300 pounds?

Has anyone recently started with easyJet as a NTR direct entry SO/FO? Just wondering what the agreement was with Type Rating costs - being either an up front payment or offered a salary reduction plan, and if the latter then is it a pre or post-tax reduction? Thanks!

At the moment as a direct entry SO you need to fully fund the type rating. For me last year it was about 30k

Yeah I saw on their website that it says £22k up front or a 36 month bond via salary sacrifice of ~£600 a month, so I just wondered if anyone recently had the bond offered to them.

Careful with the term salary sacrifice. I imagine it probably isn’t as you’d be getting it close to half price.

Sorry, “Salary deduction” of £611, as per their website. It just seems a bit mad that a self-funded £22k type rating is still required, considering the state of the industry at the moment. Especially with SO contracts frozen on the starting salary with no flying/duty pay for 2 years.

Sorry if I missed it whilst reading through but what are the thresholds hours wise for SO/FO/SFO? Like if I wanted to join as direct SFO what hours would I need to do so?

Do FO and SFO still have to pay for type or just SO rank?

if you’re coming in with experience then you’re looking at 2000 hours plus on airbus for SFO. You’ll have to pay for TR up front if non rated. Expect a lot of being messed around in your first year though. If non rated you’ll be shoved on a SO or FO contract for first 2 years at least, particularly if your current type is less than 25T. TBH, there are better FO jobs out there. Significant numbers of current EZY FO’s are leaving for BA Jet2 Virgin after just 100 sectors as their T&C’s and pay is significantly better for FO’s than EZY. TUI opening up also so worth a look there. Depends on what you’re after career wise though!

Thanks, so even as a 2000+ hours FO on Boeing I would have to pay fully up front for the type? Do they offer bonded types? Its more about getting a specific base that I want for me at this point
