UK roadshows for EK

24th to 28th June.

Just to give you guys and girls back there the heads up, read the different threads on here first if you intend going along and pick out some questions to ask.
It's getting really bad out here now with 90 hrs a month, east/west flights, long haul mixed with short and minimum days off.

I left thinking charter flying was going to kill me, WRONG!!! but this type of flying will.

Be warned!

Judging by the fact that there were only twelve people in attendance at Heathrow during the last roadshow they did there, many of which didn't meet the minimum requirements, I doubt there is going to be a massive interest in this one either.

Word is out on the ME surely! People still aren't aspiring to that life are they?!? If you find yourself needing a job, fair enough...but there's no place like home!

This thread is also running in the middle east forum.
Please Please Please read before going to a presentation road show.
10 mins reading that could save you hours of grief later in life as you find that the grass isn't greener its brown and dead.

Salary didn't increase at all, all were given was our 3% increment which is still less than inflation.
Profit share next year highly unlikely as target was set quite high.

I like their big cheesy ad in the baggage reclaim area at Arlanda for pilot recruitment ' want to move three feet to the left ...' Or something.similar.

The only reason I'd move to the ME is if my wife left me and I started hating myself

You know they're desperate when they've stopped advertising for pax and start plastering these enormous recruitment thingys all over the place. Walked through said area with a (non-aviation) friend not so long ago. "Why would you want to move three feet to the left?? Is that some kind of free upgrade?"

Think i'll stick the the left seat of the FLUF flying to bucket and spade destinations with my base 25 mins from the doorstep. Big shiny jets just fly very long distances and make you extremely tired. This lot also take the complete piss. The story is out on Emirates and pilot working conditions...

Why isn't there a "like" button?
FWIW, there are several layers of individuals in EK management that view their employees as mere part numbers to be worked as hard as plausible, the advertisements and the lowering of entry requirements are a reflection of the reality that the word is out about EK and it's working environment.
At the front end 25-40% of the flightcrew I work with are actively looking to leave, amongst the CC it's more like 50-60%.

I was wondering how those 'fast track commands' promised in about 2007/8 worked out? Guys that gave up LHS in UK for RHS in EK.

Free beer...that would be an 'out there' concept to EK.
What I find comical, is that less than 6 months ago an HR lady told me they had ' thousands' of applications and had absoloutly no need to do roadshows.
And, I beleve, just a couple of weeks ago the DSVP told a group of very senior EK pilots that ' he lost no sleep over recruitment'.

They are living in complete denial.

What? You have to be joking. I'm laughing but not. That is, well - Crap. Laughably crap. That would be terrible if you even were based from somewhere half like home.

Is it really that low I knew it had gone down from the halcyon days of the mid nineties, but didn't realise that Norwegian Long Haul was actually offering a competitive industry standard wage for 787/777

If that is truly what is on offer, it seems the "post my picture living the dream" generation are enjoying their 2nd experience of being screwed over in their careers . . . . #1- here is me, living the dream in FR, followed by #2 - here is me living the dream in EK. . . . . . . . exactly lad, living the "dream". . . . reality doesn't half suck though Eh ?

If you look honestly at the UK market aside from EK, the sudden drop in terms over even the last 18 months across the board is severe. The career is actually properly stuffed I do now think. Is taken me a long time to face facts I didn't want to face. But that's pilots. We're all sensible until defending the industry then we all defend it like odd balls.

I've for a while thought it was not all that bad, "get it in proportion, there's still viable long term options that are sure to see you to retirement without contributing towards a heart attack", but the last 2 years I've really had to come to terms that I've got to find a way out of this industry before its too late, for my health. If I were 30 there's no Damm way I'd foresee another 35 years in this "industry".

The lifestyle in commercial aviation, especially longhaul, kills you early.

It has to. To argue otherwise defies any medical logic we all seem to believe in rationally. I'm long haul, do 68-80 hours a month and feel destroyed. Unless I'm lucky, I know the years of this I've endured will shorten my life. I don't want this. I'm sick of the silent stress we carry in return for a crap lifestyle and mediocre pay.

I've worked regional, medium and long haul. They all are terrible for your health under today's working practices. 1 day off in long haul is a death sentence long term. If you're looking from short haul, you won't understand this. 98 hours long haul with 8 days off is NOT like 98 hours short haul with 8 days off. Not by a country mile, not within ten country miles. Just remember this if you apply to these companies. All you're doing is exchanging lifespan for, well. I can't think of a reason good enough.

I've recently returned from Qatar, where everyone made exactly the same comments about long haul.

Should have called Truckmaster

I can tell you one thing. Having not flown now for 3 months, I can not believe how much better I feel. I knew EK's 92 hour plus a month rosters, with all the middle of the night starts and little recovery time, was bad for me, but didn't realise how bad it was.

I know one thing for sure, if you keep it up until 65, you won't live long to enjoy your retirement.
