EK "Desperation" Road Show
Just wondering if it is 'desperation' time, do they stick to the quoted minimums of 4000 TT and 2000 hrs Jet for FO's?
and if not what is a realistic total? (wondering how many years of short haul i have left)
Thanks folks

Qwertyuiop, check your pm's and e-mails. I have been in touch dude.
And yes your right cheesed off highly experienced F/O's who joined from previous companies, (were previously Captains) who are seeing absolute idiots join in the LHS. Who have absolute no route experience, some who have never flown outside of Europe or US. Some of dubious experience.

If they had bases down under and in Europe, I am sure they would have more applications. Including mine, if T&Cs otherwise were acceptable. If they do have so many aussies and europeans, why not build that into the rostering? As long as they are working you 32 days a month (!) and only offering Dubai base, it is not worth the ink.
It is (still) fun to fly for many pilots, but it is not THAT much fun !

LGB,
If they doubled the pay, they would also have enough guys staying and applying. But it just ain't gonna happen.
Basings Will not happen, as they are afraid that the labourers may band together and cause trouble when away from desert, if they feel that local laws will permit such action.
Long range planning here revolves all around next years profits and individual managers bonuses.

Also NB that the $ has broken the $2/£ resistance barrier which has seriously eroded the pay in relation to the UK and European currencies. They will tell you about 'ERP', exchange rate protection, those of us in EK who have seen the rates reduce pay 20-30% will tell you that it simply doesn't protect... and the $s slide will continue.
This is the main reason those for example from South America are happy (at the moment) and joining and those from Europe are unhappy and leaving.
This not only effects your pay packet but also your provident fund. For example: 6 years, 3 as F/O, 3 as captain, with max AVCs approx value $110,000. 2001 value £80,000 (5.1 UAE/£). Value 2007 £56,000 (7.1/£). This is supposed to be a pension scheme.
You will also consider renting out your property whilst in Dubai. Be careful again as sending money home to pay the management charges or the full mortgage when it is vacant has led more than a few to sell up.
Remember, the road show will tell you want you want to hear. If EK is good at anything its marketing... don't get taken in... take the time to research EK thoroughly before you make any decisions. There is more information than there ever was to make a more informed decision and not make the mistake I did.
Take the free ticket, have a holiday in Dubai and look behind the scenes. You won't have too look that hard to see that all that glitters is not gold.

Got a union?
"I can accept a reduction to 30 days for a year or so if it helps out but those lost days WILL be returned"
You're kidding me right? I hope you have a good union that negotiates on your behalf.....

I hear Jet Airways of India will be offering DEC 777 positions and domiciles in both Europe and the US (probably set-up by some staffing agency). I am hearing JFK, LHR and BRU as possible domiciles for its 777 crews. Don't you think Emirates would be aware of this? Probably not.
Does anyone know if 4000 hours is the absolute minimum for FO position
would they be likely to take a 2000 hour guy???

below 4000h don't bother...
You guys have to understand one thing: the "recruitment officer" in the office dealing with your application has no authority to decide anything. Though your application might be good while still being below the magic number! In the ME they don't allow employees to think creatively and to use common sense...
When I submitted my EK application the first time (the limit then was 2500h), I had 2470h. Since I was constantly flying, I assumed that the recruitment officer would be so smart to figure out that at the time of the interview I'd be over 2500...they never figured that out and I had to apply later again.
So your first wannabe lesson for the ME is:
Don't expect any kind of decision making, common sense and creativity from anybody!

If you go, take a calculator and divide every dirham by 7.2 - 7.4 (check the exchange rate). Then ask them EXACTELY how the exchange rate protection works. Ask them if the provident fund they use for a pension substitute is protected in anyway as it too is tied to the $.
Ask them how many DECs they intend to recruit...
Ask them how many pilots have resigned over the past 12 - 18 months...
Ask them where you will be living, note it down then ask those who are here where they are living and what they can do about it if they don't like it.
Ask them how many hours you can be flown per month and ask about 'factoring' and how this can increase those hours.
Ask them how many days of the 42 they say you have leave per year they actually have to give you off...
Ask them if you have to take driving lessons when you get to DXB to get a licence.
Ask them where you will do your training and for how long and why they have to outsource training at all...
Put your glasses on and avoid the glare of new aircraft and look though the slick DVDs...
The truth is out there, it is just not EK policy to let you see it.
