Geomagnetic storms

Hey all

In light of the recent Solar flares..I'm just wondering..how can this affect an Aircraft Navigational system? and are there measures in control to prevent any adverse affects?

Think they wrap the sensitive stuff in tin foil...more sensitive the thicker the foil. Good point though..up at 40k feet there certainly are more energy chunks incoming.

One wonk suggested to me that the INS' should be unaffected, whilst the GPS may well go on vacation. Hardly authoritative however. Also, if you do have problems, the HFs may be beyond entertaining to use, if you are still using HF.

The projected worst case for GPS outage due to solar activity is about 15 minutes.

While it is an issue, it is not much of an issue, the IR will more than compensate for the loss...
