Question What is this antenna for?

Hi all,

last time at KJFK I realized a different antenna on the top of the fuselage of a Lufthansa 340. It is greater than SATCOM antenna but this aircraft already had a SATCOM antenna on top of the fuselage near the front. This new antenna is on the top of the fuselage but at a place where the wing trailing edge meets the fuselage. This antenna is bigger than the SATCOM antenna.

Thanks in advance.

Guclu,

Sounds like it may be for Internet. I believe LH are installing this on a lot of there aircraft. I think they might call the system 'Flynet' .
No doubt somebody will correct me but this is my best guess.

Thank you.

I thought it is some kind of thing like that. But I thought it was for newly mobile phone usage within the airplane. I heard of new technology on Airbus aircraft for mobile phone usage . I thought this antenna for it.

So it is for internet. OK. Thank you.

regards,

guclu

I think that you will find the announcement of mobile/cell phones onboard by using a pico-cell is just that - an announcement. Not expected to be working for a while.

As ferrydude said it's probably connexion by Boeing , you can see a pic of an ANA 777-300ER with it here:
