Thumbs down Cheeky Indian sky marshals

Rumour has it that certain Indian sky marshals are bringing a hitherto unknown degree of entertainment to the subcontinent's skies. At least one of India's finest has been reported for masturbating in front of a female F/A; another drew attention to himself by commandeering a sold and occupied business class seat instead of the coach class seat that goes with his job.

What's your source for this, Alpha Leader? Is it just bar/crew-room talk or a news report somewhere?

Reason is this has got low-grade urban myth written all over it, all the ingredients are there; innapropriate use of power or position, a "different' race, and a current problem facing society in general.

Sick Squid:

What was indeed at first a rumour has since been reported e.g. by the South China Morning Post, datelined Delhi and written by an Indian journalist.

Given the ferocity of some of the comments made about US and UK aviation security in this forum, I am somewhat surprised by your comments, though. Do we have different standards (burden of proof) depending on what country we comment on?

Do you have a link to it, Alpha? Did you see it yourself or was it told to you?

Only I checked on SCMP.com, and using their search facility through 140 articles with the keyword "Indian", 79 articles with the keyword "sky" and 16 articles with the keyword "Marshall" I found absolutely none. Not one.

Now, I might have missed something, and forgive me if I seem to be digging in a bit, but in my time in Hong Kong a few years back I can recall on several seperate occasions hearing such tales about the behaviour of passengers... always rich, privileged, and seemingly untouchable, they were usually either masturbating (sometimes into the hair of a sleeping crew member) or otherwise abusing their position by insulting or demanding demeaning tasks such as peeling grapes...

Without fail, they always occured to a friend of a friend who was telling the story... also without fail the tales I heard were always dressed in a different national costume to the teller..

So forgive my cynicism, but this tale seems like just that, only dressed up in Indian colours this time. I don't for a moment think you have any ulterior motive by the way, not at all... just that you'll have to up the ante of proof before I think this one worthy of serious debate...

And no, I don't think there's any different burden of proof at all, far from it. This thread differs from your assertion in that you are not debating a public domain procedure or change in policy, rather you are reporting as fact something that I at the moment believe is little more than the resurgence of an urban myth, albeit that I feel you are doing so unwittingly, and without any malice. Prove to me that I am wrong; when I am wrong I acknowledge it, and apologise.

Sick Squid:

The relevant article was published in the SCMP print edition in the "World" section either yesterday or Wednesday. If it was a syndicated or agency article, it might not make it into their on-line archive.

If you saw it yourself that's cool, and I apologise if you felt unnecesserily doubted...

I'd still come down on the side of it being an urban myth, simply because of the uncanny similarity to the similar ones I've come across before (!) but would shorten the odds somewhat on that basis. I'll wait and see, and bury my cynicism a bit deeper for a while... £6

Cheers, Sick Squid.

Please enter my wager of US$15.00, which - the way things are going on the FE market - by the end of next week will be around £6.00

Pinokio noses!!!

The Skymarshall in question is a Saudi National Prince who has performed this horrible act several times before in Saudia. That is what a friend of a friend, who lives next to a cousin of a friend who knows a pilot, told me 15 years ago in Jeddah. Give me a break this story is as old ( almost) as I am, and believe that is old!!!

Six pounds, please, Sick Squid

Sorry about the delay, but I do have a day job .....

Here's the headline of the now infamous article:

From the South China Morning Post of 26 June 2002

Air marshals fly into storm over litany of misbehaviour

Amrit Dhillon in New Delhi, (359 words)

Indian aviation officials face a novel conundrum: how to protect passengers from the sky marshals posted to protect them.

(You'd have to pay to retrieve the entire article from the SCMP archives).

If Gladiator agrees, please donate the GBP 6.00 to a charity of your choice.

Ere! Read back a bit.. you bunch of criminals were the ones throwing money at the problem.. I merely said I'd shorten the odds somewhat....

However... Amnesty International will get £6 extra from me this year. Cool?

But... on even longer reflection, I honestly think this is one of those "Is there a passenger Gay?" stories here. You really want to believe it, because it re-inforces something you hold an opinion on, and have grown to feel is intrinsicaly "right."

So sorry, I cannot accept it as fact... as it is, according to one of our Sunday newspapers last week I earn £180,000 a year; if they can't even get the simple task of looking up a pay-scale correct, how can we expect them to get anything else right?

Lets face it, it's too simple a story, isn't it? Really does play to the gallery...admit that one at least....

Regards,

£6

PS I've e-mailed the Urban Legen Reference Pages at www.snopes.com, asking them to take a look at this one.... will pass on any replies, never fear. Unless, that is I get stuck to the toilet by the vacuum, or locked out of the cockpit with my co-pilot and have to break the door down. Again.

Sick Squid: I'm not sure whether AI will help protect the "Spotted Owl" but thanks for your kind consideration.

They will if it starts torturing political prisoners, AL! Pecking them into submission...

BTW: what makes the article more credible in my view is that it was filed by a lady journalist.

Alpha Leader,

Do me a favour will you... copy and paste the entire article (including date and byline) into an e-mail to me, and I'll forward it to the Urban Legend People.. they can't locate the article, just like I did when I looked.

That will get around the copyright problem were you to post a pay-per-view article on the board.

Ta much! I'm starting to get into this...

Sick Squid:

It will take three working days to process my payment by Amex to retrieve the article.

In the meantime, you may use the SCMP archive search engine, entering the following keywords:

"india" AND "sky" AND "marshal"

Be sure to select a range of dates that will include the date of the article (which was published on 26 June 2002)

Enjoy!
