Question Malaysian Flying Academy

Does anyone know if MFA is still in business. Is MAS (or any airline) still sending their cadet pilots there?

It has been a while since I flew there. There was a training outfit in Langkawi, is that still there? It seems like the flying job market went down the tubes with the stock market! Palengi Air was talking of operating a jet, that was 5 years ago! I gusess the NATO doctrine applies, No Action Talk Only!

Yeap,

The outfit in Langkawi was called MOFAZ and they've been out of business for about four years now. Pelangi Air's CEO just quit and their fleet of 1 F50 and 1 DO228 (or what's left of it) is struggling to put end meet.

MFA seems to be doing quite well considering the latest downturn of the aviation industry. They recently trained 10 ab-initio Sri Lankan airforce pilots. The rest of the cadets are private candidates and PPL pilots. The instructors are very professional and proficient.

Cool

They are still in business. I heard that the MAS students will be there in March this year. They have also build a new accommodation for the student. However, there are only 3 flying instructors and 1 ground instructors at the moment.

MAYBE,

I'll believe it when I see it. MAS is now working on the concept of operating on minimum crew. Bare minimum crews are operating the rosters at the moment, that's the reason for all the recruitment rumours are going around.

They prefer to have crew from upper class background or recommendation from such backgrounds. Whatever places are remaining may be distributed like scrapes for beggars.

Believe me I'll believe it when I see it. I've been to umteen interviews and aptitude test that you can actually tell the difference. (Formality only).

See ya

Didn't know Palangi was in such a bad shape. It use to be a steeping stone for many OZ pilots (no local wants to fly there). Also the flying was very challenging, VFR approach into Pankor at very late sunset.

Since MAS is replacing their 737 with A320, any chance that Palangi might end up with a slightly used 737? What about Air Asia, are their lone 737 making any $$$ or they are just another verison of Palangi? Transmile seems to be doing very well, 727 (super J27 version!). Now that is a well manage outfit.

Yeap,
Its confirmed that the Pelangi CEO has resigned and rumour has that one of the state gov. official is slotted to take over. (What a boo..boo..)

I have flown into the routes which Pelangi has flown and Pangkor is a straight in approach compared to the Tioman approach. One way in and One way out with a hill at the end to meet. Hug the hill and make a 90 deg intercept to the runway and watch for the downdraft before the fence.

The guys flying in Pelangi are mainly locals and a good bunch of guys to work with. Very very jolly and professional considering the working environment they're in. I am not too sure about the link up again with MAS but they are, MAS will have to take part of is stake and debt(big debt).

MAS has been harping on changing F50 to DASH-8 and 737 to A320. Building castles in the sky. The DASH8 has been 4 years coming and they keep strewing up on the deal. The 737, well, wait and see.....and wait and wait .......etc..

Air Asia and Transmile are doing well except Air Asia does not have a goal or vision. They exist for the sake of political existance eventhough they lose money every month. However, they are trying from the last news. See ya.

Jollywings, echo your comments about Tioman. Its one of the nicest places to stay for a while, and a real fun one to get in to.
Would be a shame if Pelangi go under with out a good boss

Stickyb, there are 2 outfits that go into Tioman, there's Berjaya Air which flies a DASH7 and Pelangi Air's DO228. The DASH7 fairs much better on the short field in Tioman than the DO228. Plus with 50 seats, its much more comfortable. The approach into Tioman starts 7 miles back at Labas Island (a piece of rock next to Tulai Is.) start a 300 ft/min descend and hug the hill to the left. At the first white marker, you should be approx. 1000ft and at the marine park, you should be 500ft and start sharp turn straight for short finals at 300ft (commit point) and land (easy). Caution: heavy downdraft on finals as you close in on the threshold.

And as for the DASH8 and CRJ of SAEGA Air in East Malaysia, news has it, they returned the aircrafts but are soon to try for a comeback sometime Aug. of this year. I'll believe it when it happens. But it is true, the CRJ is brand new with state of the art glass cockpit and low time. (Hardly ever flies). See Ya..

Question

Is Nusantara (spelling might be wrong)still flying that SAAB 340 out of Subang. Speaking of Subang, is it confusing to fly domestic flight in one airport and intl' flight out of KLIA? How do the intl' pax make their connection? The Malayisan government is banking on KLIA to compete against Changi. Any comments from the Malaysian drivers?

You are very well verse with the Malaysian carriers. Hv you been working these parts before.? Nusantara is the right spelling an NO, they are not flying the SAAB 340 anymore.

Actually, its not that confusing. If a pax has a connecting flight at KLIA, they will have to make it clear to the travel agent or the carrier staff that he/she needs a connecting flight to KLIA.(Which they have).

If the person has no connecting flight and wish to save money and time travelling back and forth, they can catch a flight direct to Subang.

Between Changi and KLIA, no contest... Changi because, it is already established and well known whereas, KLIA is still starting out and continues to have glitches once in a while. There is no comparison, only national pride involved. Cheers..

Yeah, I am collecting the trolleys around the CLK terminal...$1 per trolley collected, not bad! On a good day I can afford to have a Big Mac and spend a couple of hours on the internet cafe.

How are the friendly Malaysian skies? Is that Shorts 360 from PMA(?) still parked at the GA apron? Looks like your PM is travelling in style in that Global Express....he doesn't have much faith in the RMAF's safety record, he sighted that as his main reason for getting the GX!!
