Smile SQ info

I've always thought it would be great to work for a company like SQ. I'm currently flying with a reginal company in Australia building up valuable flight time in order to achieve this and other goals. But, reading some past messages regarding SQ has made me believe that this large airline does not, or is not in fovour of employing foriegn pilots. If any of you SQ drivers have any info regarding their employment polocies and or requirements I would be most greatfull. E-mails most welcome

cheers

Mango, dont slip on SQ's banana skin! Their ads in Flight are a glossy impression of their world. As a none rated guy,you would be at best on local terms on the 777. Yes its a big a/c for those who wanna fly the big stuff, but believe me (and the dozens of others) there's a price to pay.

SQ are an anti-caucasian outfit. They have no choice but to employ us at the moment, as the 777 is not beem utilised efficiently, due to low numbers of Captains. Their command training is inadequate to produce the numbers required from the locals, and anyway ,takes over a year to finish.

Dont take my word for it, ask around. You will be doing lots of 4 sectors, and will find that the long trips away will be given to the locals as they want the money and are, erm, local. Dont we also want it? And dont forget, on local terms you need every penny. The double whammy is that although you are considered a "local" you will still be shafted as an expat. You will not win.

The ADFO is a Captain Freddie (Kruger to his friends!) His belief is that Singaporeans are far smarter than "others"(ie YOU), and his recent outbreak at a ARM tranning course enforces this.
Good luck with Virgin Oz!

Question

Sia sniffer your obviously very bias in your argument. As this is an anonymous forum and looking at where Mango is located ie: in Oz don't you think you yourself are no better than SIA. Australia is a multicultural society and obviously people like you live in the last century where Britannia ruled the world. For all you know you could be responsing to an Australian born Indian or Chinese. I would be careful about what you say as your giving the wrong impression about a group of people as opposed to an airline.

To all those who doubt Mango and SIA sniffer, be warned!! Working with the "airline" is sure confirmation of their queries. Everything said is true, and further more once in the system they have you by the proverbial .....!
Ask around and you will find a multitude of very upset pilots. Their grievances are endless.

Thumbs down

Phew! And I thought Cathay had bad crew-management relations!

Sorry, I know I don't belong here, but I thought I'd take a peek at how you fellas liked your employer. Not much better than we do over at the Heart of Asia, it turns out -- and I hate to say it, but boy, that's a relief! Good to know we're not alone fighting the good fight, y'know?

As for you, Mango, looks like you'd do better to go for Virgin Oz.

Cheers!

Mango,
There are some expats who are happy to be in SQ and some who are obviously not. Cost of living in Singapore is expensive and you should take that into consideration.

Thanks for all your comments so far. The replys seem to weigh towards the belief that SQ does not favour expat pilots any more. Seems strange that such a large company, who would need lots of pilots (think about the pilot population ratio), does not have a reputation for being a good place to get hired. On the scale of things. SQ is roughly the same size as QF and other airlines in the Asia pacific region. I always hear of job oppertunities with these other companies but never for SQ...hmmmm?

To GPS:
To give you more insight...I've lived 11 years in asia and really love the place. No, I'm not of asian lineage but I hope that should not have anything to do with it. Its all about flying and not about skin or eye color.

I still dont seem to have the answer to my original question. "what are the requirements to get a job with SQ". Are there any SQ pilots out there that can help me with this matter.

Cheers
Mango

P.S. I bet SQ is great! but everybody is keeping it a bloody secret. You dont want floks of pilots ending up on your doorstep causing mahem to your otherwise traquile excistance??? Thats why you all are hush hush about it???

mango u will find grievances anywhere u go but i would contact as many of the expats who
do and did fly.The guys i have spoken to have
said generally that it is a good place to work for until u start asking questions(shoosh ozzie we run a profitable airline etc)captains generally treated better
and bring a book for the long flights because the other fellas will be speaking in a language that is foreign to u,unless of course
u r the captain then u can speak the queens anytime u want and they will speak same language back. When r they recruiting next by the way.

Mango - "by the scale of things SQ are about the same size as QF" _ I don't think so, SQ have over 40 B747-400 alone, 77 B777 delivered/on order, several A340 and even more A310.
If you are able to apply as an Expat. captain then it is worth a go, if you are a very low hours beginner and can put up with about seven years of relative misery to attain a very negotiable position, also, give it a go.
If neither of the above then 'pass'
Regarding the "racial interface" there are some areas with problems, depending on what your position is and your attitudes are.
SQ is not perfect but is big, expanding, pays below industry average, and is employing.

Methusalah....you seem a man of wisdome. Please, can you shed some light as to the flight time requirements for SQ. I dont fly jets so will not have the experience to apply as a captain...rather I would be more at the bottom end of the scale. At the moment I fly with a regional airline in Australia, but am interested to open my horizons. Any more info would be great! E-mail more than welcome.

Mango

P.S. So if SQ is that much bigger than QF you must have a great need for pilots????

I feel obligated to jump in. The negative aspects of working at SQ as pointed by others are true. Sad but true.
