Devil HSI callouts for a visual approach?

During approaches in good VMC, do many airlines require the non-flying pilot to state "Loc/glideslope alive" etc?

Because of the fact that we are required to have an instrument course set as a back-up for visual approaches, it has always seemed to me that if nobody verbalizes that the Loc course (although a VOR course can bring you towards the wrong parallel runway) is moving, then this back-up might go totally unnoticed. It does not hurt to arm the flight director and check it at 1,000', along with the gear handle (+lights) and flap indicator.

With closely spaced (CLE, DFW) parallels, a crew also could easily have the wrong course set in, especially when tower tells you to do a last-minute sidestep or other distractions happen as the crew is remembering to read the Landing checklist, or simply waiting for tower to give them a landing clearance.

PNF callouts

It is SOP in my company to call out these LOC/VOR radial/pseudo vortac lines alive, as well as radio altimeter alive (mountaineous terrain). I think you're right. It should be like that. It is very surprising to see how easily pilots who almost never flew visually in their life can miss the runway during visual approaches. No PAPis? What should my height be at this range from threshold (called out by PNF)...?

You should use the same procedures during a visual so you don't end up at the wrong airport! Happened many times!

you can loosen up a bit maybe on the all required call outs, but you still have to be prudent on all the really important stuff, i,e, LOC & GS for the correct airport. Have fun once in a while, but be carefull!

Agreed.
Use callouts as necessary, otherwise you might end up like AA at SEA...landing on the taxiway.

Or, UAL, landing at the wrong airport altogether...

Probably a bit off the HSI call-outs discussion, but I have always preferred to select HSI mode when conducting an approach in a strong crosswind (visual or IMC). The larger "picture" of the localiser position with reference to the centre line allows for a faster appreciation of centre line tracking rather than the tiny localiser needle on the EADI. Horses for courses.
