yes, it's a quiet Sunday and my car needs oil - it got me to thinking, has anyone put avgas or av oil, say 100LL and 100SAE in their car and what would the effects be...I know cars pass my schweizer on the highway as it is..
I don't think the avgas would be such a problem as high perf fuel is 97 octane, what about the effects of the oil - cars run at about 320F, but I don't think the car would pump 100SAE, as the robbie CHT runs at max 500F as per the POH.

The LL in 100LL stands for Low Lead I believe. However, having seen the amount of lead in the combustion cylinders of aero engines on overhaul, avgas would seem to contain a fair bit of lead. Almost all cars except the older ones have a catalyser. The catalyser is contaminated by lead and is then useless, so that it will need replacing - and is pretty expensive.

Don't try using either unless you know what you are doing (I know, that's why you're asking...
).
AVGAS LL is only "low lead" in comparison to the amount of lead it USED to contain some years ago. It contains much more lead than "proper old fashioned" leaded 4 star does. It will kill a catalytic convertor very quickly and it may even put a lead glaze on spark plugs. If your engine doesn't have a catalytic convertor it could be used provided that the seals in your fuel pump and fuel lines are compatible and don't swell up or go soft. However, lead salts may be deposited on the exhaust valve faces and the performance will gradually drop off unless you regularly "decoke" the engine. Racers use it for it's good anti-knock properties (often mixed into their favourite "brew") and accept the down-side as they tend to strip their engines regularly for other reasons.
In UK it's illegal to use AVGAS in a road-going vehicle, so don't get caught or accept the consequences.![Wink](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/wink2.gif)

Aircraft oil not good for cars
MIDAS (car service outfit in Australia) said my car had been underserviced as the oil was like treacle.
That will teach me for using aircraft oil when I couldnt find any car oil [for the last couple of litres of top ups].
I thought it was taking a bit longer for the oil pressure light to go out too. Perhaps it mixes badly creating a goo thicker than either product. I wont do it again!

I used to work with an idiot near Darwin who would fill his V8 commodore up with 100LL out of the avgas bowser at a remote airfield where he was based. He figured it was his right to do so if he had to work out there 200 kilometres from the nearest main town. I told him not to do it for the following reasons -
1 - It's bad for your car, this thing was meant to run on leaded super anyway!
2 - We actually needed the fuel for the aircraft
3 - It was stealing.
4 - The company supplied him with a car.
He kept it up. Months went by. During a drive to town one day the motor seized rock solid at about 140 kilometres an hour. Motor written off, underpants soiled, auto transmission severely damaged, $500 for a tow truck to nearest town, and no car for about 7 weeks.
He never did it after that........

Thats a coincidence i blew my rd350lc up also in the early eighties . But it was not running on avgas . I reckon you would have had to retard the iginition timing as the octane rating is much higher than standard pump fuel . Most cars today have very hi tech iginition system but it would kill the kat in a few miles . I still have a 1980 and a 1982 rd350lc now

Ah...the good old RD250LC. Now that takes me back. Changed the rear sprocket to a larger one and could thrash a 350LC off the lights easy. Confused a few 350LC owners.

I have used Avgas in engines I have built many times without ill effects. Note that we're talking about performance engines here, designed to be street legal with drag strip use of a weekend. Never had an engine fail so far.
Shytorque is right, it's usefullness is because you can advance the timing a great deal. Just what you want when your throwing 35psi from a turbo down the engines throat.
Wouldn't dream of putting av oil near one through. Oil is a (pardon the pun) black art, and engines are fussy on it.

Now Jet A1, that's a different matter for diesels
Avtur isn't as oily as diesel. You will wreck the injector pump otherwise. 100:1 should do it.

Lots of people were doing that scam in Scotalnd years ago. Mixing dirt cheap engine oil into avtur and selling it as diesel.
The scam still goes on, but these days it's Polish guys claiming to be truckers selling excess diesel. It's not diesel, it's mixed up aviation fuel.

We used to run the squadron mini on 100/130 in the mid seventies. The vehicle mechanics used to rebuild the head every month after the valve springs collapsed!!!!!!!!!!

I drove my 1100 Mini and my V8 Rover on avgas. The Mini was the "old" 120 green stuff and the Rover on both. Apart from adjusting the advance it was OK. You need an engine with a compression ratio of 10;1 and higher to get any real life/benefit out of it though.
I actually called the refinery once to ask them about 110LL and they said it was about 4 times the lead content of the premium pump gas at the time and if I could get it to use then, well done.
Used to have a nice sideline selling Avgas ot the local racers, I bought it through the company and sold it at a premium cos most of them couldn't get it anywhere else, aaaah, capitalism!![Big Grin](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies2/eusa_clap.gif)

My first car was Honda Civic made in 1984, with 1.4 engine. And when I was in fligth school we (me and my schoolmates) used to collect fuel samples and put it to my civic. It practicly run on AVGAS almost 3 years and off course we used the aviation oil in the engine aswell. By the way the car is still moving, I sold it to my friend in 2002 and the engine is 100% original.
Japs can make sometime pretty reliable things.
