TPP, I accept your point but plaese allow me to retort:
1.Your A$20,000 whilst being a small sum, is worth about double what you quote as its £ rate, due to cost of living in Oz.
2.You admit yourself that you only qualified last year. Most of the guys on £30,000 over in Blighty flying for PAS etc are Ex Mil with several thousand hours of experience, more than likely at low-level, at night in dog **** weather flogging around Northern Ireland; these guys are bloody good at what they do and are massively underpaid.

For too long now, we have been silent on the North Sea about the treatment that we receive from our management. Aircrew have to attend CRM courses, but management still carries on in its own ignorant manner. The fat cat board members continue to enhance their own grossly inflated salaries, lose contracts, then cut the workforce. We have nothing to lose, so why not take industrial action across all three UK based North Sea helicopter companies, before they finally merge into one company. As long as it is done legally through BALPA, they will have no redress. CHC owns BIH and Bond. OLOG is the financial backer for CHC. How long before OLOG runs the North Sea and drives down salaries?

I left the North Sea in 1979, when pay was reasonable by industry rates. Wild horses wouldn't drag me back!
I've watched helicopter wages drop in UK year after year, and wonder why anyone bothers anymore. Australian rates may seem low on a straight exchange rate, but since $A1 buys the equivalent of 1 pound sterling (no pound sign on this keyboard), a pilot earning $A45-75,000 down here would have the lifestyle equivalent of a 45-75,000 pound pilot in UK.
Offshore in the Northwest of Western Australia is currently paying these rates, as are media and EMS around the East coast of Australia. Lots of wannabees chasing too few jobs, but if you are in the right place at the right time, you'll look forward to a reasonable career path.
Start salary for a Bell 206B driver is about $A30k, depending on the company. We have an "Award" system here which mandates salaries across all jobs, but this now tends to be a minimum salary rather than the standard rate that used to be 5 years ago. Competition between companies for the well qualified drivers is such that there are some good deals to be done, if you have the qualifications.

As a soon to be ex-mil pilot without a pension for the next 27 years I agree pay should be increased. I agree with most of the comments about us ex-mil keeping the pay down. But this, I believe, is going to change soon.
With the avent of the 'Linkup' scheme being introduced into the military everyone is studying for their plank licences. For those who are unfamiliar with 'Linkup' it's an incentive scheme dreamed up by the MOD to retain pilots for longer. The scheme gives individuals 10K to spend on study and flying to gain a licence but in return they have to give a couple more years. Everyone is going plank because rotary pay is so low. That's why I think the number of ex-mil pilots for low paid rotary jobs will dry up.
I've had to accept bad pay for shift work because I'm tied to an area but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try to do something about it.
Attila is right about getting BALPA involved. The olds at Shawbury are giving FR a real hard time about pay by using BALPA and they seem to achieving their aim. They currently get 30K for a non-licence job with 9-5 hours but even they at their ripe old ages are leaving for plank jobs!
Things are going to change but they are going to need a helping hand!
