What's the answer? Operation- "Winter Race"
Presently there is a massive requirement for air support in the Kashmir region [as you are all no doubt aware].
Given also the massive funding problems the key donors are weighing up the alternatives on helo solutions. We [cannot disclose -only via PM] have done everything in our power to suggest a combination of aircraft and given the mixed fleet allready on site and the ability to fund the existing fleet or go with other aircraft types I would like to hear from experienced Lama and KA-32 drivers on what makes more economic and, more importantly, operational sense.
Situation is as follows:
Either support the existing fleet thro' funding 4 MI-17 at exorbitant rates ie. USD4800/hr or translate those funds into contracting Lama,s, Allouettes B3's or the like .
Given that the the 17's, are now lifting upto 2500kg externally upto 2200m from Muzaffarabad [AO is only about 50nm and typical lifts are less than this round trip] we also have options on KA32 [allready on station in ISB] but run at slightly less than the 17,s.
From an operative point of view, ie turn around times , ROC, ROD and flexibility of operations I am more inclined to use the Lamas, what can you guys suggest given the short time the guys in the places that matter need to make a decision.
BTW, I understand that this is not the venue to discuss commercial proposals but if someone does have a commercially sound solution i can get it to the right people-I hope this does not impinge on the rules of engagement here as i am new to this site from a post perspective but follow it regularly for a number of reasons.

Air Dynamic,
Except for Lama and Al III, I don't have any experience on the aircraft you mentionned.
Lama is not very efficient on distances over 15 Nm, slow to the point that time - flying and overall can become a factor, especially with external loads, and it burns about 210 l/h.
But it's something else entirely on short distances. It can lift up to 800 kg, depending on many factors, with a minimum turn-around time. So if pick-up zones with refuelling facilities can be set up close to the destinations a good combination could be a heavy lifter to feed the pick-up zones and a bunch of Lamas to dispatch to stuff to the final destinations.
Cheers

Thanks ATN,
Nobody seems to really care about the biggest helo deployment in the world at the moment, more interest is devoted to subjects like "how sore can your arse get sitting in the same seat for long enough",
Best,
Nick

Plenty still to do before the weather clamps in.
However...............
All the chat so far has been on providing more lift; I suspect better strategy to task with a decent fuel matrix and quicker turn rounds would do the trick.
The most effective units in the area have sorted out decent fuel and load handling support.
