Helicopter down in Cumbria

From BBC News Online

Two injured in helicopter crash

Two men have been injured after a helicopter crashed in Cumbria.
Police said they received a call at 1425 BST on Monday to say the small civilian helicopter had come down north east of Keswick.

The men, who are in their 30s have been hurt in the crash, but a police spokesman said their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police, ambulance, fire brigade and mountain rescue teams are involved in the rescue operation.

Police said the helicopter came down on a track leading to Bowscale Tarn, near Blencathra.

Local news reported that there were two on board,an Instructor and Student. It had flown from the south of England and had refuelled at Carlisle prior to the accident. There were pictures on the TV of the accident site and although it wasnt a really good picture It did look like a Schwiezer 300 but I could be wrong.

Heard it was possibly a H300 out of leeds doing a mountain flying course. May have been a well known northern based instructor and cpl pilot doing a mountain flying course which went a bit squiffy. Believe it was on bbc news last night. Names withheld to protect the innocent. Hope they recover soon. Just glad they both weren't killed!

The Westmorland Gazette quotes the helicopter type as a "Schweizer 269CS" (sic) but adds no further details. The article, for the curious, is here

Aha, found another source with a photo. Check this link . Having enlarged and rotated the photo it looks like a heavy starboard side impact with the tail gone and skids bent up underneath, plus of course the sloping ground.

As I walked that very fell path last summer, I would estimate the NGR as NY336315

The occupants are described in that article as "The pilot, a man in his 30s from Leeds, suffered neck injuries. His passenger, a 57-year-old man from Boston in Lincolnshire, sustained chest injuries." V.lucky it was just that.

From what I have heard, I think you'll find the injury info is the wrong way around. The Instructor has a back injury (needs an op to sort it out) and the "student" (PPL owner) is the one with the chest injury (fractured sternum).

They are both a bit battered generally too, as you would expect seeing the state of the 300.

AJB - Fractured vertebrae for Mr. Instructor. Not the sort of injury you want when you earn your living riding around in shaking, vibrating helicopters. Fingers crossed for a full recovery.

Lets all hope he recovers well and soon.

Be left with no doubt the Instructor had ability. He had done his LPC on the S300 last October and had demonstrated several e.o.l.s.. all excellent!

Its very sad the terrain may have been less forgiving.

topilot or to..pprune

By all accounts, it apears that they're both 'lucky'. Not nice terrain to have to carry out an eol.

The 'student', is out of hospital and happens to be the owner and regular flyer of the now defunct ac. Friend of the owner says that he's a tad bashed up but is already thinking about replacing the ac with a Robbo - but I'll put that down to PTS syndrome;-) He bases the ac at LBA but it seems to spend most of its time at the owner's house when it's not being used by Multiflight. Although a frightening experience I suggest it will be difficult to keep this particular regular flyer out of the sky!
I'm afraid I do not have any more info on the instructor. A speedy recovery to both.

It is good to here that at least one of the guys is out of hospital fair play to him wanting to get back in tha saddle soon having an experiance like that. It took me six monthes before i could go past the scene of my accident and 18 monthes before the flash backs stopped so it is pos the best way to tackle what must have been severely extreme experiance.

hopefully the instructor will be on the mend soon and out in the near future

Sincerely

Lucky escape from helicopter accident

A BOSTON man is lucky to be alive after escaping from a horrifying helicopter crash in Cumbria.

Geoffrey Day, of Sibsey Road, is recovering in Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary after the light civilian chopper plunged into a scenic valley.

Mr Day's wife, Margaret said: "He is in intensive care but not doing too badly – I have been able to speak to him briefly. He has got major injuries but he's coping."

Mr Day, 57, a flying instructor, was the passenger in the Schweizer 269 CS which had taken off from Carlisle airport before crashing into the face of the valley near Mosedale.

Mrs Day said: "He is a trainer and a very experienced flyer."

Walkers watched the helicopter as it descended into the hillside last Monday at about 2.30pm, leaving a mangled wreck of bent blades and a smashed-up fuselage.

Police, firefighters and paramedics all attended the scene with Keswick Mountain Rescue put on standby.

Officials from the Air Accident Investigation Branch at the Department of Transport are trying to establish the cause of the crash.

The pilot, a man in his 30s from Leeds, also escaped from the wreckage. He suffered neck injuries.

I presume this is the same Geoff Day who is ex-RAF and who I remember as a QHI at SARTU in the early 80's. If so get well soon Geoff.

Very sad to hear this. Flew with Geoff just a few weeks ago.

Top bloke. Learn a lot from him every time we fly.

Get well soon, mate.
