MI-8 in Louisiana ??
Was driving north out of Lafayette on I-90 and a MI-8 went by. I had to remind myself where I was. What's a MI-8 doing in Louisiana?
Just curious.

4HP,
Mi-8? check this website out, and read the para "Case For Russian Helicopters" somebody ought to tell this guy the cold war is over, or has he been watching RockyIV too many times...
Either way it is a highly amusing "must read" for all of us in the free world!!!!

It probably belongs to a company called RAM; they operate an 'adversary' force out of Fort Polk for US military units to train with. They have MI-17's, Hinds, AN-2's etc. The MI-17's (or MI-8's -I'm not sure what they are) come from Panama. See, whenever we invade a country we just help ourselves to their military hardware. Watch for Iraqi Migs in the skies over Pensacola soon...

Its probably because the Russians are smarter than We are. Most of our surplus stuff gets junked, whereas their Junk gets Certified. They are all over Africa. Our manufacturers have had their heads up their collective Butts since the first inkling of Surplus were hitting the streets. Ive also seen a few on the West Coast. Its amatter of time.
After being in a few, I believe they are better suited for hard work than ours anyway.... They can usually be repaired with Home Depot items such as Duct Tape, Bailing Wire. In Africa anyway, thats acceptable, as there are not Inspectors running amuck to see if you paid ten times the value for parts.

B Sousa,
From what I heard, saw and understand-if one of your switches brakes you can go buy a toggle switch in any hardware store to replace it.
It would probably save you about $200.And if you look at the way some of the machines are flown in Africa and Malaysia,I gotta agree with you-the Ruskis build tough machinery

There was a documentary on the History Channel or Discovery Channel about the Hind not too long ago. They are being used for combat training along with the Mi-8. I liked the epilogue "Mi-24s are now logging more hours in the US than anywhere else".
