So, let's get this straight:

The "wannabes" forum is populated bt IT consultants, all of whom are 'not pilots'. Why are they not? At best, this proves that IT consultants are more likely to have the will to become pilots. In the worst case scenario, it could indicate that to be an IT consultant is to forever condemn oneself to languishing in the region of recirculating flow that is the "Wannabes Forum"

If we go next door and ask the pilots what they used to be, will they all say "IT consultants"? Who knows? I would be interested to find out.

(No offence to IT consultants, of course: You've all done really well for yourselves already )

Thumbs up

Fire Officer on Blue watch, Barnsley, S. Yorkshire, UK

A fantastic shift system - 2 x 9hr days
followed by 2 x 15hr nights
Followed by 4 x days off

Just about to start instructing with the Air Cadets as a Civilian instructor and when the distance learning schools get the CPL sylabus sorted I'll get cracking on that.

I flight-service Tornado, Harrier, Jaguar, Hawk, and Sea Harrier aircraft (avionics, eng/airframe + armament).
I help control the flight-line operations, 'see offs/see ins' of all the above jets plus heavy A/C inc. BAC-111, Tri-stars, Andovers and Hercules.

I also get to fire 6-barrel mini-guns out of Chinook helicopters. Plus I can put together any aircraft weapon in service and make lovely big holes in our beautiful English countryside.

All this without being in the RAF!

PORN!

Nice to see some serious pruners answering this shout, Pie, Blindside, 006. I the same as Capt Crunch, Forget IT who wants to be an IT. and called a specialist to boot.

Presently I am classed as uneployed and it feels great.

Self-employed researcher/writer; so plenty of freedom and spare time to go on PPRuNe, study, fly, whatever.

The people I know through PPRuNe are all in IT, or computer literate at the very least. Other pilots I meet, PPLs or professionals, frequently don't even have computers, and many haven't even heard of PPRuNe!!!

Conclusion - people who have computer access and are into aviation read PPRuNe; those who work in IT have access more often and read it and post more often. I really wouldn't deduce any more into it than that.

I had come to the same conclusion. People in I.T and other similar jobs are sat on computers all day with a bit of free time and hence why there are more I.T people on during the day. In the evening it appears to be a very wide range of people.

I'm a beancounter for a bank in the City. Money's not bad but the hours are a real pain in the backside.I work a lot of weekends which means my PPL is taking longer than it should. The weather is'nt helping either.

I am a licensed aircraft engineer who is becoming rather disillusioned.
It seems to me that all these IT chaps do nothing else all day but look at PPrune looking at all the messages they've posted. And probably in company time???
Still if you can get away it.

one day.

I am also exceptionally bored. Work is so quiet (good thing if you work in support), I spend about 7 hours a day on the net, 1/2 that on PPRuNe. Sounds sad, I know but, I get paid IT Software rates for it .. which paid for the gliding .. then the ppl .. then the hours .. and about to pay for the ATPL written's. One day I'll escape from here. I even once, got my boss to unwittingly write me a reference for the RAF. Said it was part time, like the TA

ickle (Danny, can we have a new 'bored' face ?)

My view is if we are not getting paid to fly then we may as well get paid to sit and Prune!!

For those of you in IT who are contracting / consulting - do remember that if you still have your UK Limited Company post IR-35, the ATPL is, I believe, at least partially tax deductible. You will need to be a bit cheeky to get this one through.
