Lightbulb confused about lisences

hello I am an spl holder living in Ireland, soon to be a ppl.
I am confused as to exactly what an atpl is.
I hear people saying "frozen atpl" and i'm not sure what it is.and CPl, do you ned to do more exams to progress from cpl to atpl?
and if anyone has the time there and knowledge could you explain what restrictions the new JAR lisences have, with regard to training in foreign countries, and bringing your lisence to other countries.
thanks very much..

Once i kudn't even spel lisence - now i has one ...

The difference between a CPL and an ATPL licence is that to apply for an ATPL you have to have a CPL, an instrument rating, credits for ATPL theoretical knowledge tests, 1500 hours total time, 500 hours multi crew time and some other bits and pieces.

A 'frozen ATPL' is someone who's completed all the tests and requirements for the ATPL, but hasn't gained enough flying experience for the licence issue yet.

With regard to who will recognize the JAR licence / whose training do the JAR themselves recognize, well that's the biggest and most controversial can of worms in the wannabe world at the moment. Suggest you utilise the 'search' button and read a couple of recent issues of 'Pilot' and 'Flyer' magazine.

A frozen ATPL is just a figment of peoples imagination. It means the ATPL level examination passes are frozen untill you meet all of the experience requirements. When you have the experience it does not automatically unfreeze, you still hold a CPL/IR and have to apply and pay for the issue of an ATPL much the same as if you had no licence at all.
