Thumbs up

No, you can not work with an FAA ATP in europe. You will have to go through an expensive reconversion JAA, but the advantage of the USA, is if you stick there for several years, you will leave the States with 1500-2000 hours and plenty of flight experiences.
My address is [email protected] if you have any question.

You can work with a U.S. ATP in Europe. There are quite a few "N" registered acft. being commercially operated throughout Europe.

The majority of 'N' registered aircraft operating in Europe are executive turboprops and jets, nominally based in the US and on 'temporary' detachments to the EU. There are a few freight aircraft operating between Europe and the US on 'N' registrations that use EU-based crews - Atlas Air at Stansted for one - but, as you can imagine, this has not gone down well with ALPA. I wouldn't bet on these arrangements having a long future.

There are many parts of the world which traditionally use expatriate US and European labour that would welcome an FAA ATPL, but, in general, only when accompanied by many hours on a useful commercial type. However, we may be assuming too much here......

Are you doing an FAA ATPL, or a JAA one? If JAA, of course you can use it in Europe.

Thanks you guys for the feedback I"m going to press on with the FAA ATPL as I feel it is the cheapest option. I will be on the lookout for N reg jobs on compleation, if not prehaps use as a lever for borrowing money to convert to JAA?

The job opportunities in the UK for experienced pilots using an FAA licence are low.

The job opportunities in the UK for inexperienced pilots are lower.

The job opportunities in the UK for inexperienced pilots using an FAA licence is so low as to be nearly zero.

Exclamation

As a JAA ATPL & FAA ATP holder with commercial experience I have found about 3 jobs in the E.U. over the last few years that would have enabled me to employ my FAA qualification . But as Scroggs points out , these would have been on specific types for which I was not rated . Presently , I'm having great difficulty finding anything in the U.S. which will allow me to use my licences .

Worth noting also that at the moment , unless you are a U.S. citizen or are type-rated on a machine over 12,500lbs mtow , you can't train on anything over that weight in the U.S. so there really is little value in gaining an ATP if you are unable to use it .
