I currently have a UK CAA PPL and I am going for a month to Australia in December. Ideally I would like to get my night rating and get some more hours under my belt. 1) Can anyone recommend any good schools near Sydney and 2) Do I need any extra documentation from the Aussie authorities (like you do in the U.S) if I intend to be flying around solo. Thanks

You will need to take your logbook, licence and medical to a CASA office and apply for a Certificate of Validation. This allows you to fly private day VFR, after doing an aeroplane flight review with a suitably qualified instructor.
Good luck!

Bankstown airfield south west of Sydney city centre is a popular airfield for private flying. Schofields flying club seem to have a reasonable fleet, and were very helpful. Oz has a lack of VORs and NDBs, so make sure your VFR navigation techniques are up to scratch!!
Getting the Oz licence is more straightforward than in the USA.
