Has anyone had the pleasure of doing this and if so what are your impressions?
Im thinking of going later on this year and getting all the exams out of the way once and for all (hopefully)
Thks

Teroc,
I have done the majority of my flying and a lot of my ATPL studies in SA and found it a really aviation friendly environment.
The flying is good, I have rarely had any trouble with the weather and Jo'burg isn't the most cutting edge for evening entertainment,ie. you should get plenty of study done (Washed down with a few Windhoeks)
The area is pretty safe, just so long as you use common sense, the locals at the flight school will let you know where to avoid.
FTC has had a bad reputation in the past, as a result of a couple of fatal crashes about 18 months ago. The answer is, as always, check the flight school out before you commit and if you're not happy with the aircraft, or confident that you can get yourself out of trouble, don't fly.
All in all I couldn't fault it (once I had got use to the slower pace that is) and if my circumstances hadn't changed I'd be out there now.
NB. best time to fly in SA is between June and Sept (their autumn/winter)very few thunderstorms.
hope that helps

(I didn't train with FTC all my flying was out of Rand Airport SE Jo'burg)
