fish == Cabair == How are they these days?

I haven't heard anything about Cabair recently, and remembering the slating they used to get on this forum I am interested to hear if anything has changed...

...I am considering doing my CPL/IR there starting in December, but I want to be sure they won't mess me about - and that I'll get good enough instruction.

Nish.

I have always heard mixed things about Cabair.

Some loved it some hate it or hated it.

Best advice is to go and have a look around , sit down beforehand and write a list of questions that you would like to have an answer too. I am one that believes that individuals should make up their own mind on what suits them.

Cabair don't have that many aircraft to go around, which can lead to some problems in getting an aircraft for a slot.

A friend of mine went to do his IR at Cabair to find:

-Airline students were given priority,
-Bookings of aircraft generally went out of the window due to aircraft going tech.

In general, he intimated that the majority of students were young, and used to the "don't complain" around here mentality -something you would expect of school leavers.

Fortunately for him, he was more wordly wise and recognised it was something he could not wait for. After a few weeks of embarking on the course, he spoke to the management, and requested a re-fund.

Cabair gave him a full refund, and apologised.

Thumbs down

If you'll take advice from an old hand, avoid them like the plague! Things have improved since Capt. DH left, he's now at SFT, but not too much has really changed! Try Atlantic Flight Training at Coventry, avoid the mob at Bristol too, that includes the ground school lot. Use ATA at coventry for any written courses. If you take my advice you'll pass everything first time and you won't be ripped off and badly treated!!!

Best wishes for your future career.

I doubt the accuracy of your advice if you suggest

avoid the mob at Bristol too, that includes the ground school lot.
I have used BGS and had no problems at all and never heard of anybody having a problem with them.

EGDR,

Its a free world, and if you don't like the advice I offer so be it. There are plenty of schools to choose from, I personally don't think he should go to Bristol, I and many others have our reasons not to advise Bristol!

Cabair in my opinion is a disorganised outfit as I found out whilst doing the Upgrade two years ago.

Aircraft were always going tech, the instructors each had too many students and the operations staff treated all the students like s***t.

I took unpaid leave from a good job to complete the course and ended up flying only twice in the first seven days due to instructers being too busy.

Finally passed IR first time after spending many more £££ on B&Bs and travelling expenses as well as lost income due to this greedy outfit taking on more business than it could take.

Instruction is first class but I would recommend elsewhere as Hours count more on your CV than name of flying school attended.

Students always moan about not enough aircraft and missing slots. It happens eveywhere expecpt BAE. And there its a lack of instructors not aircraft which adds up to the same thing!

I don't think CABAIR are any better or worse than other large FTO's. I think they did have management that were slightly more visible and disliked by the student population though - hence the extra slating you used to hear about them.

As regards Bristol Ground School - I have never been but in all the years I have been running this forum I have never before heard a bad word about them. Conversely they have had praise heaped upon them. I have persaonally experienced being taugh by Alex Whittingham for my Perf A and I can tell you that in my opinion he is amongst the most gifted groundschool working in the world today.

I note with some trepidation that its a BGS banner add floating in front of my face as I type this but it remains the truth!

Good luck wherever you train,

Nishco with your 250+ posts on this forum it was my gess that you would have seen a thing or two about cabair it was not my intention to be rude and i feel that others above pointed out the best places to spend your money.

I will add that i did my IR at the wycoumbe air center some years back and feel that they would offer a good training package.

I have observed the business practices of cabair over the last 20 years or so and little seems to change over the years except that they get bigger.

The thing that they do realy well is market them selfs to the non aviation public and so can get away with all sorts of stunts that part the unsuspecting punter from money , you will note that once a person has seen how other outfits work they do not go back to cabair.

The posts above have indicated a number of companys with business ethics that are above reproach i think that you should try one of them.

But in the presant climate dont pay up front !

Having been to Cabair a few years ago i tend to agree with all that is said about them. The suggestion of writing down questions that you would like answered sounds good except it's Cabair your asking, and you will only recieve answers that you want to hear. I believe that all the schools have faults it is just left for you to decide which of these faults you can live with and then go for it. It does seem to me that OATS has got very good relations with the airline industry and therefore more guys + girls get jobs. Wherever you do decide to do your training I hope all goes well.GOOD LUCK!!
