Seeking Career Guidance - Move to Germany/Austria or stay in Hungary?
Dear All,
I’m a Hungarian guy, going to graduate from my Computer Science uni course by this time next year. It has become clear that choosing this path was a mistake and I want to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a pilot.
About my financial situation: By the time comes to join a flight school, I’d have around 15.000€ to my name. Obviously, this is a very small amount of money if we’re talking about flying. I come from an average Hungarian family, so my parents helping out is basically impossible.
My „safest” option would be to go to Wizz Air Pilot Academy, as the training takes place here, in Hungary.
Pros:
· “Cheap” – I could pay the 13950€ down payment out-of-pocket
· I could live at home with my family during weekends – much cheaper living costs
Cons:
· Based on reviews I read Wizz Air wages are bad, the roster is awful, management doesn’t care about you
· I’d be tied to this company for 4-5 years until I pay off my loan
· I’d be living on a minimal salary for these 4-5 years
· I just want to get out of Hungary asap![Big Grin](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies2/eusa_clap.gif)
My ultimate goal would be to work at a Lufthansa Group airline and to eventually settle down in Germany/Switzerland/Austria. I came across European Flight Academy and the pretty recent Beginner+ programme of Austrian Airlines.
EFA Pros:
· Wouldn’t have to work 5 years at a company I don’t want to work for
· Would immediately achieve my goal of working at a LG airline
· Higher quality training
EFA Cons:
· I’d need to move to a different country and I’d need to cover my living expenses, which would be pretty tough as a guy coming from Eastern-Europe
· 110k€ debt
· I don’t speak very good German yet, maybe around A2 (I could improve to B1-B2 by the time I start)
The situation with the Beginner+ programme is a bit different. As the training ground is pretty close to the Hungarian border, I could still live in Hungary, with a 60 minute commute. Also, the financing is a bit better, you need a down payment of 10k€, then Austrian Airlines will finance the rest if you get accepted. (But you’ll need to pay back the remaining 85k€ in one if you don’t, which I find pretty weird.)
Based on these difficult circumstances, do you think it’s worth the hassle to pursue studying abroad, or should I “play it safe” and try for Wizz Air? I’d like to start my preparation soon and I have to decide where I want to go, so that I know what I have to prepare for, as the tests are completely different.
Sorry for the long message, I’m pretty overwhelmed.
Thank you for reading and any responses!
