MEDICAL 4 JAR-FCL CLASS 1 DONE !!

Just came back from my JAR-FCL class 1 medical today. I have posted a bunch of stuff regd the hearing test & EYESIGHT on a posting today. Please look under earlier posting in reply to a hearing query.

It consists of:-

Go into nice shiny building of CAA. Get pass & bag checked out. Show yr passport @ aeromedical reception, fill in form relating to medical history. Take top half of clothes off & wear a bath robe.

1) The CAA take the p**s out of u (in other words an urine test - but I cld be wrong)

2) Blood sample with a v. helpful doctor who calmed me down
(I'm scared of injections U C ?)

3) ECG (resting heartbeat) connected to biceps & ankles too

4) Hearing tests (two of them - see my earlier posting)

5) Eyesight test (usually first). Try to travel the night before as yr eyes will get tired. Also see article under hearing too, also posted today by me).

6) Chest x-ray to establish infections, physiology etc

7) Spirometry where u blow down a tube after measuring yr height & weight. This mesures lung capacity, volume of air expired etc against an "ideal" reading for yr height & weight. I was 158 % efficient on one of the readings - that's with a cold too
(posing git).
Also, u have to try to hit a target with force of exhalation of breath; one test where u blow through the same tube, but max capacity for six seconds. No resistance is in tube at all

8) An electroencephalogram (EEG) - u can say that again.

They use some type of abrasive paper (sandpaper ?) to rub down patches around ones scalp & temples to make a good contact.
Electrodes are attached to these & wrist bands monitor one's heart rate at the same time.
These electrodes pick up the brains alpha waves - one's conscious brain waves (delta I think is subconcious). U should try to relax one's mind so that they can get a good reading (This was difficult even though I practice meditation regularly).
Go too far though & they get an unresponsive reading (bet yr superhuman for that then).

Whilst u have yr eyes closed, the Sister puts a lamp in front of yr eyes. It's quite similiar to a dentists' lamp, but much smaller. Whilst she controls the procedure from a VDU/PC, she asks you to open one's eyes.

A light show then begins consisting of a fluorescent light eminating from this lamp at different frequencies. Each time she changes the frequencies, she will ask u to close yr eyes. The frequencies will speed up & up.
She will repeat this with eyes open, both faster & slower, backwards & forwards.

The worst bit is the where they try to induce a epileptic fit in one's self by causing u to hyperventilate (Is this the right term ?). Basically, breathe deeply, without clenching one's teeth as quickly, deeply & as long as possible.
It seemed to go on for ages, but I didn't pass out (all that running I did u see made a difference - not sure if that would have helped or not really).

At the end of this test she explained that she was looking to induce a fit in someone as certain individuals are more suceptable to seizures than others (esp. children, most grow out of this). Also, with the hyperventilation exercise, she wanted to see how the brain reacted to incresed oxygen flow to it (and also to have a good laugh
when I collapsed - JOKE !!)

With the strobe lights - one's Alpha brain waves should eventually follow the frequency of the strobe lights. If it doesn't on either side of the brain it indicates "an organic problem" (something which commercial farmers suffer from I believe).

The Sister said that it looks like I had passed, but the neurologist (not in the building) has to check this too.

This test lasts about 42-45 mins. They have 2 machines for this but one was being serviced at the time so I had to wait a while.

9) Last but not least, the Dox examination:-

Quick chat with friendly doc who took my blood earlier. Strip down to underwear; check heart beat, reflexes, heart beat from back whilst breathing deeply. Get up, close yr eyes & stand on one leg, fall over, do it again, get dressed.

Doc then informed me that it looked like I'd passed the JAR-FCL Class 1 medical - only the blood, urine remain (and neurologists opinion), but he doesn't perceive any problem with this.

Just got to wait 2/3 weeks for the results, but I read in Pilot mag that things maybe delayed in FCL & medical divisions due to staff retraining in JAA regs.

So hopefully I've passed !
Thx to the staff there for being so pleasant - it certainly made it easier for me to get to grips with the increase in cost to £387 for the medical (Blood, X-ray, EEG I don't think were in the CAA medical though, but I cld be wrong)

Also thx to First Officer & another Pprunetter who advised regd accomodation.
Try Gatwick Manor 0.5 miles away from shiny, expensive CAA building. £39.00 per night & good quality too. Tel 01293 526301

Also, the most important thing - Free drinks from the vending machine between 1030-1100 (something like that). Makes the £ 387 worthwile I think. . .

Medical started @ 0845 'till 1430. About 1.5 hrs waiting in between sessions though (included in above time).
It was my first medical of any type really.
