London Met.........

A friend just called me from the UK and he said he spoke last week to London Met. to join the ATPL full time course.
He mentioned to them that he has an aerospace degree from a very good university and full CAA B1 lisence with A330 and B737 type rating, but still told him that he must take maths and physics exams to enter the course.
Any comments on this?

If it is just the entrance maths and physics tests they are easy and don't take long... so just get on with it.

Although it beats me why you would do a full time residential course if you are an experienced pilot with 2 type ratings... why not just do a distance learning course and get the exams done in a fraction of the time at a fraction of the cost... the mind boggles.

Hey the 2 entry exams are not hard, You get something like a 100 questions, all exams are multi choice, and you do the exam in your own time.
They send the exam to your door!
Good luck anyway

Yes he has maths and physics equil. thats one of the requirements to attend a course at a university in the UK and he went to Kingston.
Plus he has an engineers lisence (B1) which I believe he passed the 18 exams required by the CAA plus the Maths and Physics B1 Modules which a passing grade of 75%.
So as you can see he is not a guy that has not done this before.
Is not the point of doing the exam but is a bit offensive I believe.
In their ways is like you have a PHD in maths but you still have to take the exam to attend the course.
Is just not right in my opinion.

what is someone who did maths and english years ago along with other things and then sat back in a job for 15years came on the course, they could be very smart but might struggle in a learning enviorment again!

the exam is there to make sure you can keep up with the pace, after all you dont want to spend your money then have that one guy who is struggleing holding up the whole class every day and then causeing the better students to struggle time wise,,,,, better to have a minimum standard.

I went to London Met,, there very very good,,,, its just mind numbing as those exams are!

No need to get offended!

I think more and more higher education institutions in GB are expecting students to sit some form of entry exam prior to starting courses, which wasn't really the case a few years ago except e.g. Oxford, Cambridge, etc.

It's been chucked about that the reason for this might have something to do with concerns about the standard of some (certainly not all!) students in GB, who get college passes good enough to get onto a Uni course, but who susequently can't cope at Uni.

I suspect in the spirit of fairness and human rights any institution employing this practice would have to apply it to all applicants, irrespective of what's on their CV.

Which, in conjunction with the valid point above about time spent away from full time education, is why someone with a solid engineering background might be being asked to sit them.

It's a pain in the @rse, but I wouldn't get offended by it. And a refresher course wouldn't do it, because they want you to demonstrate your pre-course ability, not spend time and money educating you up to a standard where you can then commence said course. Those type of courses are usually called "an introduction to...."

Regards, and I hope your friend gets what he wants

Maths Physics brush up test

The idea of the maths/phisics test has two reasons.
1. to get you back into the learning curve.
2. to make sure that you are able to study material and come up with the correct answers.
We are not alone in having entrance tests as they are designed to get you on the right track for the ATPL exams.
From what I can gather some may think that years of flying and many hours may exempt you from the pre course test, but this is not the case with us or our competitors.
We have recently had a very experienced A300 co-pilot from Air Seychelles who did not query at all the entry qualifications required. She passed all exams first time and was also a great asset to the class.
It is not about what you have done before its about what you need to know to pass the exams for the JAA licence.
We will give you the best tuition and with your effort get you through the exams.
If you have any problems then please contact me at London Met.
