(Question): Microlight flying in/near Bershire...?
morning...
I have a friend who has caught the microlight bug and wants to learn to fly them.
Does anyone have any information on training locations in or around the Berkshire area...? I can only think of Popham and it would be difficult for her to get there.
Also looking for the usual stuff:
costs per hour
medicals
required hours
etc...
thanks
Mark

Depends which end of Berkshire! Apart from Popham, there's Thames Valley Airsports at Chiltern Park, between Reading and Wallingford. Also worth considering is Jay Airsports at Plaistows' - it's actually near St Albans but is quite convenient for East Berkshire/M25. Both of these offer weight shift and three axis instruction. There are other options further west around Swindon.
A good place to look is the directory section of the BMAA web site http://www.bmaa.org - in fact if your friend were to join the BMAA all questions would be covered in their new joiner's pack
Medical - need a doctor to sign a declaration for the NPPL(M), which is valid for 5 years. No set fee for this, but between £10 and £20 seems par for the course.
To gain an NPPL (unrestricted) requires a minimum of 25 hours, 10 of which must be solo, including 2 x-countries of at least 40 nm, with an outlanding.
Instruction costs - in the south east it's usually around £80/hour - travel further afield to North Bucks/Northants borders and the rate drops as low as £62/hour.
It's possible to be instructed in your own microlight which reduces the rate - instructors charges per hour then would be from £25 to £42 per hour.
In practice Wx requirements for lessons are similar to PPL(A).
All the other student costs apply - charts, protractor, books (Cosgrove is the bible for microlighters), etc.
Legislation now permits microlights to be hired by qualified pilots although I don't know of anyone who is offering this yet. Therefore pilots buy their own aircraft - entry point about £3000 - see advertising on the BMAA site or www.afors.com to get an idea.
Hope this answers your questions - if not ask some more
