Post Music in flight

I'd like to try plugging my portable CD player into a PA-28's pax mic socket for those 'enroute' moments. Obviously i'll need to bring the bring the output down to mic level, but I need to know the impedance of the electrical system also. Anyone got any advice/knowledge to spill?

I was actually pleased to see someone else has thought about this, because I am an avid music listener in my car. However, when I started my flying lessons, I quickly discovered that the luxury of music wasn't going to be available while flying. Mainly because I was too darned busy to worry about listening to anything. Ironically, in your car, you can literally work on "autopilot" - something I'm beginning to discover you can't do in some light aircraft -even those fitted with one. I understand your longing for something other than silence in the cockpit especially since you're presumably long qualified and flying far and wide on your own sometimes. If you're not into silence, it can be pretty rough having to work through it, but as I'm discovering it's perhaps not a bad thing, as it lets you get used to engine tone if nothing else. I'm very into playing my music up full blast in my car, and when on a test drive for a new model last year, remarked about how strange the engine sounded. It was only later that I realised I never normally hear what the engine sounds like, as my music more than drowns it out !! Don't really know I'd like that in a plane. So, I'm afraid, that like Fallen Eagle, I'd have to say leave the idea on the back seat and keep your ears peeled for all the other interesting noises a plane can make all on its own!

As long as I'm not using it, I usually tune the ADF to an AM station & listen to that.

I keep the volume low enough not to interfere with comms & switch it off when the workload rises.

Yeah I use the AM stations as an enroute nav aid as well

My experience of aircraft raidios suggests that you will probably be on a loser trying to get a portable CD player to work through the intercom... I have known 2 DC 13.4 headsets to be incompatable!

But let me know if you manage it without destroying all the comms systems... what music would you all fly to?
Claasical, opera, rock, punk, house, hip hop... the mind boggles!

Me?... no lyrics... only uses the left side of the brain, leaves the right side for concentration. Lyrics occupy the right side.

Know of Tornado guys who pop instrumental tapes into the nav systems (allegedly)

I tune the ADF too, I've done many hours of flying over deserts, out of radio contact, which is very monotonous so why not listen to some music (obviously not full blast though!). I have even flown in a light aircraft that had a CD player installed in the dash. I like that!

You need a 40db pad to reduce the line level to mic level. I use one the other way around to plug into my video camera mic input from the headphone output to record the intercom on the camera.

Try a company called Canford audio based in Tyne & Wear or Maplin might help, explain to them you need to reduce line level to mic level and they will know what you mean and put you right.

Be very careful not to blow your intercom with too much level into a mic input. The pad should prevent that, but test it fully on the ground first, it would be a silly way to go 7600.

Not sure I would like the distraction myself but I guess you are a grown up.

Hope that helps!!

sorry boys to ruin your day but,
i work in a commercial operation and we have a portable CD player hooked in our pa32 300 works great the only hassle is the turb on rough day but usaully sweating to much to worry about music,no hassles thru the intercom or the DC 13.4.
sorry mate don't know anything about the wiring can find out from our engineer next time i see him.but the power is thru the lighter jack and play comes thru the play jack on the intercom.
more +'s than -'s NZ CAA won't let us install one in our IFR a/c due too much paper work for them just the usual crap reason?
need anymore info?

I would be inclined to agree with the view that you have too much to be concentrating on, when attempting to tame one of the mighty eagles of the skies flown by the average PPL, for you to be riffling through your favourite Manilow compilation or whatever (and think of all those times people crash their cars whilst fiddling with their stereos), but, having said that, I recall reading of some (ostensibly serious) research that indicated that listening to certain music, especially Bach's sonatas and partitas and Mozart's chamber music is actually conducive to intense concentration. It is apparently thought that thrash metal, the Clash's second album, and anything involving Kylie do not fall into the category of mind-enhancing music, which is perhaps a pity, but there it is.

I appreciate all of your feedback - a couple of really helpful posts there. I was surprised at the amount on negative feedback - let me please clarify things. I'm not some nutcase who won't be happy unless pumping the Top Gun theme music through his headset while in the heathrow control zone. I simply would like to hook up a CD player on low volume for brief moments with no radio contact. As someone commented, we're all responsible adults so please don't worry about me!
