Upsetting the NIMBYs

Hi All,
I thought about adding this point to the 'airfields under threat' posts, then thought it might be better opening a new thread.
It seems to me that NIMBY's may have something to complain about, i.e. NOISE.
In order to be able to feed my sad addiction to flying, (totally incurable), I once rented a house within the circuit of a half-busy airfield. I have to be honest, even at the 'neighbour-friendly' circuit height of 1,000 feet, it was still pretty noisy on a Saturday afternoon. Yes, much noisier than next door's hover mower. Not as noisy as a passing gravel truck, but little in life is... other than a Cessna Cardinal, of course.
Did I start whining? No, my hypocrisy doesn't go quite that far. However, I can see why non-aviators cry foul.
Comments?

I am fortunate enough to have a strip at home. I live within six miles of a licensed strip and another two private strips! Especially at weekends, I do get very concerned when aircraft fly over and are either low or noisy. In the past I have always been able to prove that noise nuisance wasn't from my strip but generally from training aircraft operating out of the county's largest airport some 20 miles away.
However, during the week I am blighted by low flying Tornados, streaking across the house (and strip)there were 2 yesterday within 20 mins of each other. They can not be 250', they are definetely lower. The noise is scary but what worries me most is me approaching at 90mph on short final and a fast jet in the same area at the same time. Anyway that I can have them recognise the number of unlicenced strips in the area? This may smack of NIMBY-ism but it is in reality a safety issue, I am not permitted to streak over Biggin Hill at 150kts/500'!
I love aircraft but just don't want to see a Tornado too close. The Americans F-15s play at far more sensible height when ACM-ing!

I live in Lincolnshire and share your concern re the Tornadoes.
During the week the trick is to get above 2000ft as quickly as possible and descend in the ATZ, although I know one guy who had a near miss when a pair thundered across his home field.
Problem is that these guys fly with their heads down watching their terrain scopes.
Tucanoes and Hawks etc aren't as big a problem... they aren't as scary.

Sticknruda - I've just been reading your contribution to C152/Tornado mid-air in the Military Pilot's forum. I too fly out of a farm strip and mine is right on top of a VOR. Tornados & Jaguars regularly hammer over the top of us, perhaps using the VOR as a turning point? Surely at the speed they're travelling at, it can't be up to us to react? By the time you've seen one at 2 miles and figured out that he's heading towards you, which way do you turn?????

That incident was very local to me... the Cessna was hired from my base field.
My neighbour has recently retired from Tornado aircrew and admitted to me that the low flying crew avoid talking to Humberside LARS on a "political" basis since Finningley was closed against the RAF's wishes.
They now shoot down the Trent from Fenton to Waddington without communiacating to the newer civilian radar unit.
On saying that the Cessna driver was an idiot to be circling in the Trent Valley area at 800ft on a weekday... we all know the danger and avoid it!

I seem to recall from my days in HM Flying Club THAT there is a contact point somewhere in Strike HQ that I can ring, give details of my strip. As it is unlicensed has no ATZ, it will not stop them blundering over but will alert the FJ guys that there is a higher possibility of seeing a/c landing and taking off. I fly a high performance aerobatic taildragger, on climb out I can't effectively see very much in front (and it's in my interest during the week to get off and through 1000' pdq).
On landing - I come straight in at 90-100 mph with side-slip so half the world is lost again.
I left The RAF so long ago that I don't have any friends who could help. All I want is the tel no. It may prove futile but at least I will have tried.
Anyway - another fine day off to perfect those flick rolls!
