Angry Airfields under threat - list them here

Seeing the comment from Oscar Golf under the 'Welcome one and all' thread that Rochester Airport is under threat from their council, I wonder is anyone else having problems with airport 'landlords'?

(Bl**dy councils. In the US and on the continent, town councils are fighting for the privilege of having their own airports. In this country, we're treated like kids playing with noisy toys....)

Grrrrrr. :| (Sorry - using up all my edits trying to make a cross smilie! No luck so far...)

Old Sarum is threatened too, I believe

I was there on Saturday, sunshine rolling hills, historic setting, mild rumble of a Lycoming, it's a crime if ot goes.

There is a hint in the above. Considerate flying is the key Even if the airfield has been around since WW1 the housing etstae of 1982 vintage will always cause problems if we don't keep the noise down.

What can we do? Join PFA and help join the force for action?

The UK is unfortunately pathetic for promoting flying. On a recent visit to the US, I went to the local FAA office to get my airman permit on a UK licence: it was done in five minutes for no charge, and they post the permanent card to your home address for free. Aside from that, they have more airstrips per sq. mile than anywhere else in the world pretty much, coupled with low fuel prices, and clubs which don't rip you off. $50 wet for a C152. Somebody should sort this country out, and stop Brown's penny-pinching.

The NIMBYs are being a right royal pain in the @$$ for those of us who use Toronto City Centre Airport (CYTZ). Interestingly enough, whenever I'm in the neighbourhood I can't hear the planes over the noise of the auto traffic.

Did you see the classic noise story in the PFA mag a while ago?

Council noise man called out to a complaint about noisy aeroplanes. He turns up in a clapped out van with broken silencer. He find s thet the only things flying are RADIO CONTROLLED GLIDERS. Calls at the complainer's address which is a considerable distance from the field. She says she called after seeing the aeroplanes from her upstairs window through BINOCULARS. The old biddy was deaf as a post as well.

Although the above is quite extreme it does demonstrate the lengths that people will go to to complain about something they perceive as a selfish hobby for rich people (tell that to the struggling student trying to maintain a food intake and flying hours).

Even White Waltham, which has been an airfield since Pontious was a pilot, home of the WW2 ATA etc, has neighbour problems.

Flying in a considerate manner has to be done or our beloved government will do even more to clip our wings. Look at Germany for example.

That reminds me of an experiment done at CYYZ a couple of years ago. The airport has a curfew in effect (11pm-7am, if memory serves) and the operator, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, wanted to find out if stage III takeoffs would upset the neighbours. They authorized a cargo carrier to take off every day an hour before the curfew lifted. For six months they received no complaints, but after a local paper reported the story they averaged 50 complaints a day.
