Question Engine Checks...replacement?

Q: How often are single engined aircraft required to under engine checks/overhauls? Is it true that engine blocks have to be replaced after a specified period of hours?
Thanks in advance for your help

I'll stick my neck out here and try an answer for you. It does depend on the aircraft, the engine and the type of airworthiness certification but it its typically 2000-2200 tbo. Public Cat CofA is usually more strict than private cat which can get extensions when the engine is then run 'on condition'.
Hopefully, someone with an engineering background will pick this up and give you a better answer...

The manufactuer of the engine will recomend a life for each type of engine they make normaly refered to as the TBO (time befor overhaul)in the UK the CAA will allow an engine to go 20% over the TBO on a public transport C of A and no restriction on a private C of A provided that it passes all the normal maintenance checks.
This may seem like a good idea to run the engine "on condition" but the life is set to the most economical overhaul time run an engine much passed the TBO and the crankshaft has a good chance of going outside overhaul limits so you have to buy a new crank at aprox $2000.
I intend to replace the engine in my aircraft at the TBO or shortly after if it comes up in the middle of the summer.

As long as the oil is changed regularly and there are no metal traces in it the crank should go well past TBO without undue wear. The camshaft is a whole different story. As the lobes are exposed (unlike the bearing surfaces on the crank) the oil tends to run off them if the engine is unused. They corrode and when started up after a long idle period wear rapidly. In addition, during long periods of idleness, the piston rings can "set" into a position and you lose compression. Exhaust valves tend to stick for the same reason. All in all, an engine that is not run regularly stands no chance of reaching it's TBO. Reckon on £800 per cylinder for an overhaul.......
