Can't find JAA school in California.

Hello all.

I was let down by a flight training school today, the postponed my PPL training and I decided to give them a miss. Now I'm finding it hard to find another JAA school in California. The only reason for choosing California is I have an aunt over there who I can stay with.

Any one help me?

Please don't ask me to search pprune or google because I have already done that.

While we're at it, does anybody knows any more good FAA training schools who have I-20 and good flying weather ?

Try California Flight Centre at Gillespie Field, San Diego.

FAA Part 141 schools: San Diego district, Riverside district, Sacramento district, Van Nuys district.

See App. 2 to JAR-FCL 1.015 on converting FAA private pilot certificate to a JAR-FCL PPL.

A few of the other JAA approved FTOs carrying on training outside the JAA Member States [NB, UK CAA is the authority for the purpose of granting the JAR-FCL licence/rating/qualification/etc]:

Orlando Flight Training, Inc., Kissimmee FL
European Flight Training, Llc., Fort Pierce FL

Full details in UK CAA Standards Document 31.

Except that California Flight Centre is not JAA approved - Duh! The only JAA approved school in California is Anglo American.
STERNONE asked for an 'FAA' flight school.

In fact there is a reasonable conversion route from an FAA PPL to a JAA PPL.

If you have 100 or 150 (can't remember the figure) hours, then you have to sit only about half the JAA exams, and you take the checkride.

After a bit of local training of course but you always need some hours of "local training" no matter how good you are - even just to get used to the different plane. Only a fool would go for a checkride in an unfamiliar plane, in an unfamiliar area.

This is actually a very interesting option, because if you do a standalone JAA PPL in the USA you have to sit all the 7 JAA exams. So this is an example where doing one thing and then doing another is a good route.

I always recommend one to do both the FAA and the JAA PPLs. This is very efficient and gives you the best bet hedging for the future.

The other benefit of this is that it drastically widens the choice of U.S. schools - basically any school on the SEVIS list can issue an I-20 and that should be all Part 141 schools. The problem, widely reported, is that the JAA approved schools in the USA are very busy training airline pilots (notably for India) and some of them are sausage factories.

Sorry to hear you have been let down by AAA. Unfortunately they are the only JAA school in CA.

They had a very good reputation up until about Autumn 06 when they overstretched themselves with way too many students, mostly from India. I was there in November 06 and it was shambolic, but friendly. I really had to fight for serviceable aircraft and instructor availability, but I got my IMCR and night qual, so mission accomplished.

I had heard that they were addressing the problems and things were getting better again. I suppose postponing your course before you arrive in the US is progress!

Flying in California is fantastic and San Diego is a great city, but I struggle to recommend AAA.
