Taking your dog overseas

Lizzie my Jack Russell terier has particularly been enjoying her trips (with ear plugs) in the baggage bay of the Super Cub recently. She'd quite like to extend these to encompass the continent of Europe. If she gets a doggy passport, whatever that is, is this possible for her without enormous red tape?

Thanks,

QDM

I haven't checked the detail, but I think that, even with the required paperwork and vet checks to meet the regulations, the transport pets by private transport (surface or air) is not allowed. It must be on a traceable route such as a scheduled flight/tunnel or ferry to designated entry places.

Others may know more/different.

Alas not

Unfortunately european pet travel other than by Ferry etc. remains a no-no. I looked into all this for our Great Dane 'Scooby' who would have enjoyed the regular flights to Tours to our second home.
Instead of which i have to pay £30 to Brittany Ferries for the priviledge of having him sit in my own car for the crossing.

Biggin Hill Executive Aircraft Handling
London Biggin Hill Airport is the first, and for the time being, the only general aviation airport in the London area to operate the Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Pet Travel Scheme.
Approved operators will be able to fly owners with their pets directly to London Biggin Hill Airport for clearance, rather than to Heathrow or Gatwick.
London Biggin Hill Airport has a specially trained team of pet handlers, the Sky Pets Team, who will meet the aircraft on the main apron. A member of the Sky Pets Team will board the aircraft and check the pet’s documentation and micro-chip whilst the owner is present. If the documentation is correct the pet will be free to disembark the aircraft with its owner and, once the passengers have cleared Immigration, they can all continue their journey in the UK. The clearance time at London Biggin Hill Airport is considerably shorter than at Heathrow and Gatwick, and a great advantage of the service we offer is that owners will not be parted from their pets.
For the procedure to run smoothly, Sky Pets require 24 hours notice prior to the arrival of any aircraft carrying a pet which requires clearance. All the relevant documentation should be faxed to Sky Pets no later than 24 hours prior to arrival to enable the documents to be checked to avoid any problems on arrival. The pet and the original documents will be checked on the aircraft by a member of the Sky Pets Team. Any pet which arrives with incorrect documentation will be transported from the aircraft to the Sky Pets Animal Reception Centre where the team will endeavour to solve the problem, but this may cause a delay or the animal may have to be sent to quarantine.
Pets can also be cleared at London Biggin Hill Airport before proceeding to any other UK airport.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Only authorised carriers which comply with the requirements of the Biggin Hill Pet Travel Scheme and hold an approval for the route issued by DEFRA will be accepted.
For more information on how to obtain authorisation please contact:PETS Help Line: Tel: 011 44870 1710 (Monday to Friday 08:30 to 17:00)

For more details about the SkyPets service at London Biggin Hill Airport please ask for our specialists on this service,
B Ames and Jill Johnson.

Thanks Red Four
This is a good step forward although the devil is probably in the 'approved operators' detail for now.
Still. It's a good step in the right direction !

Routes and transport companies

You may use any of the routes and transport companies on the following lists to bring your dog, cat or ferret into the UK under the Scheme, subject to the transport company’s agreement. All companies have been approved by Defra to carry dogs, cats and ferrets but not all may wish to carry ferrets. Check with the company before booking your tickets that they are prepared to carry your pet.

Your pet may travel to the UK via any qualifying country or countries. It must not have been to any non-qualifying country in the 6 months before entering the UK.

You may not bring a pet into the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme from a private boat or plane.
So that's answered that then.
