Hi all,
I am currently in the process of purchasing a headset.

I am confusued with the type. I believe that you can buy a headset with a power source and one without? what is the difference?

many thanks

A headset with a noise cancellation feature (called ANR) contains some electronics and will need power from somewhere; this can be either a battery (inside the headset or in a box in the lead) or it can be powered from the aircraft via a special connector.

If you want an ANR headset for use in anybody's plane then you need to get one with the standard two jack plugs, and the battery will be somewhere within the headset. You should carry a spare battery, and you need to remember to switch the headset OFF after the flight - the battery life tends to be of the order of tens of hours max.

If you have your own aircraft, then get an aircraft powered version and get the special connector fitted, and then you can forget about batteries. For example the Bose X (the best ANR headset around) comes in both jack-plug and aircraft-powered versions.

ANR headsets cost more but are worth every penny for the lower noise level.
