South of England Showground

The South of England Showground at Ardingly is evidently a former airfield, but I can't find anything on the history. Was it called something else?

See http://fly.dsc.net/u/Search search on Ardingly, and get the aerial photo. You can see the peri track and some hangars v. clearly. No sign of hard runways - I assume it was grass.

I take it you're talking about TQ 342 303. I'm not convinced, to be honest. Admitedly, it is a nice bit of flat ground amid rolling countryside, but the 'peritrack' looks more like purpose built paths layed down for the showground. Note that the field is only about 800m long as well.

Working link?
