Question Importing a SEP from the USA: The procedures?

I would dearly appreciate a list of procedures/tasks/things/items one needs to complete in order to get a US registered and based light single, e.g. a PA-28-161 into the UK and legal for flying and keeping in the UK permanently. Preferrably from someone who has had first hand experience.

Also, what are the advantages/disadvantages of leaving it on the N-reg? If I do decide to go this route what must I do?

Please state, if you can, the order; time taken; costs involved, VAT? etc.

Many thanks.

Note: I appreciate this may have been covered before. However it's not easily understood due to various bits being in various threads.
