Someone stop me making a horrible mistake (ANR headsets)
I'm about to invest in a Telex Stratus 50 headset. I've been told repeatedly that it's the dog's bollox and is apparently better than the BoseX. Can anyone comment please or suggest possible better alternatives?

Try both for a bit and buy what suits your nut and ears best.
Never flown with the Telex ones but they have to go a long way to better the Bose-X.

I've flown with both, Telex for about an hour, Bose for 15 minutes, and the from that the Bose is by far the better headset.
However, I still think a DC takes some beating, not just for sound quality etc, but for their indestructible-ness!
Buy a DC, and put the money you've saved towards flying

Got Bose X for Christmas for my PPL. Tried them out yesterday. Really unbelievable! Chuffed to bits!
I used a fabulous tactic to get them. I told my other half that I was nervous about doing my PPL because of the danger associated with excess cockpit noise and that I could die without getting the best headset for Christmas!
Under the tree on Christmas Day!!

Someone recommended one of the Pilot ANR headsets. I took a look at it today and never have I seen such a flimsy looking piece of junk. The headband looked like it was about to come apart in my hand. I think I'm better off getting a DC H10-60 and getting it converted to ANR.

Funny you should mention Pilot. I have also got the Pilot 17-71 DNC II headset. Whilst I agree that it looks flimsy, it actually isn’t once it’s on your head. The active noise reduction is excellent. My only gripe is the cumbersome battery box which always seems to be in the way.
My other “favourite” headset is the Avcomm AC-900 which considering that it provides passive noise reduction is truly excellent. Almost wish I had stuck with it and not bothered with Pilot and Bose.

I thought the Pilot just felt like it was a "budget" headset. Although when I tried it on there was some obvious noise reduction, the seal round my ears wasn't tight and this couldn't be changed without probably tieing a belt round my head

I had the Pilot DNC and the plastic headband broke and cut the side of my face in flight. It is not very rugged and the DNC is no where near as good as the bose.
The breakage of the Pilot was the reason I ended up with Bose as the ever helpfull Harry Mendelsohn offered my a no quibble upgrade to the bose.
I tried 8 different DNC headsets before I finally settlled on the bose. If I had just gone for them in the first place instead of being such a tightwad I would have saved a lot of time and effort!
You cant beat BOSE-X for value and performance.

Rupe, I have to say in Mendolsohn's defence they have given me nothing but first class service in the entire time I have dealt with them. I have sent stuff back because i did not like the look of it and they have never complained. I have had 3x GNS430 of them and 3x GMA340 Audio panels in the last year and there price and service has been exemplary.
The service over the headset is just charecteristic of them and I wont go anywhere else these days.

Pretty much just echoing what has been said already. I'm half way thro my PPL on route to getting a CPL and decided to get my own headset as I'm going to be doing alot of flying. I tried on loads of different sets (15+) and the bose are easily the most comfortable of them all. They weight nothing and are so smooth. I always thoght that ANR would be abit of a fad, just sometihng to hike up the price but when I first turned on the boses ANR I just couldn't believe the difference. All the noise just gets sucked away. Bose gets 10/10 from me, only thing letting them down is the price. I was lucky tho as I have contacts in the US so ended up paying £500 for them instead of £750+
Go bose, you really won't regret it if you fly alot.

Firstly i have to point out that people have different size and shape heads and so you must obviously try each headset yourself in order to find the most comfortable. What is great for one may be ghastly for another
Do try the headsets with and without glases on as some have bad seals when glasses/sunglasses are worn and can go a long way to reducing any ANR gains. Do try the headsets for a realistic period of time. It is no good sticking it on your head for 5 mins in the store then wondering why after 2 hours in the air it is really starting to crush your head.
I have flown a Gazelle helicopter for 3 years with Bose-X installed and found them good though with a few problems. The headbands are not the most comfortable for me and the female passangers hate the way they keep pulling their hair out when removing the headsets. And the volume controls could do with working on. These were panel powered but when I have used the battery powered version found the construction of the battery box and controls again could have been improved.
I have also spent a fair amount of time flying a Jet Ranger fitted with the Telex 50 D's. Firstly they are very large & purple! After using them for a week I had completely forgotten the size of them and found them to be very comfortable both with and without glasses. They have larger ear pads and I don't notice the noise level increase when glasses are worn as I do when using the Bose-X, probably due to the larger padding. I was also told by other pilots that my transmissions were much clearer from the Telex 50's mic. The battery box though is quite large and I am fortunate in the Jet Ranger to have a spot between the seats to clip it out of the way.
At the end of the day you pay your money and take your choice and it is a personal one that will vary from pilot to pilot. Given the choice I would prefer the Telex 50's overall but either will be better than a standard set of ear warmers.
Buy a pair of each from one of the suppliers. Check the returns policy first !!!! try them both for a week to ten days and then send back the one you don't want.
Good luck and hope whatever you get works out for you.
P.S. check all your warning horns stall etc. and audible alerts if you use them on the GPS are still heard with the headset on and working as some of these sounds have been known to be masked by ANR.
