I learned with AWA Flying Group who also offer very reasonable rates. When I started, they were among the cheapest in the country. Not only that, but you become part of the history of the Armstrong Whitworth company. I don't visit them often any more as I live too far away, but I've heard they've just got a simulator of some sort...

and finally there's there's Coventry Aeroplane Club which has been member owned since 1936. Unlike the others they operate from their own modern clubhouse/hanger and also have a social side based around a bar with a superb view over the 23 threshold. They also have their own (free) car park!

Don't forget that you have to jump through a new hoop at Coventry by paying £50 for a security pass. This is mandatory for anyone going airside. It's a bit of a pain to sort out.

Atlantic Flight Training are also based at Coventry and whilst the facilities are excellent, there is less of a club feel.
Their primary purpose is to train people for professional licences so they train and charge correspondingly. They are however a very helpful and nice bunch.

Picked up my air side pass for Coventry in October. It cost me £0 - that's it, nada, nothing - not a saussage.
I have had to fork out for passes in the past - but the new orange ones appear to be free. (Either that or someone forgot to charge me!)
Personally I fly with Coventry Aeroplane Club. A large proportion of my flying nouse has been gleened by sharing the experiences of others over a relaxing drink in the club bar. I also find the people there very easy going and there is a distinct absence of "stuffy-ness".
Coventry Aeroplane club is owned by its members - and holds the lease for the land it occupies for longer than I will be on this planet - this is your chance to own a bit of coventry airport!
Of course, there is nothing stopping you flying with the other schools and joining Coventry as a social member.
BTW - just in case you think I am the membership secretary or something - I am an ordinary member who got his PPL with CFS and simply loves the place.

Has the (re)introduction of scheduled passenger flights into Coventry had any effect on the GA scene?
I believe landing fees went up recently & do they still operate the scheme whereas some vintage [pre 1949?] aircraft get the landing fee waived?

FatFlyer,
with an address given as London, why do you want to fly from Coventry? Or are you like me and dont know how to change your address!
Why not go to Leicester where there is a great club, lots of friendly people, 3 hard runways, 3 grass runways and not all the hassles of flying from a "Big" airport with the need for security passes and ATC. alternativly Wellesbourne just south of Coventry.
Nothing against Coventry, Ive only ever flown in there a couple of times, but despite it being the nearest airfield to where I live, Its not the sort of airfield where I would go to fly for fun.

Like FF, I live in London but fly from Coventry. As an hour-builder, it's a *lot* cheaper for me to fly from Coventry as I don't want to pay up front at a London club. AWA is much friendlier, non-profit and with nicer aircraft than my London club. I personally prefer flying from a bigger airport, so it suits me fine. As my family live in Coventry, it's a good opportunity to see them, too.

With regard to the increase in passenger flights - if anything, I think it has generally improved the level of service provided by ATC (a great bunch of folks who are very understanding and helpful).
The 737 flights don't seem to to be too frequent - and when I have come in behind one, its easy enough to take a wider base to ensure that there is good separation - again, the ATC are very helpful to keep things safe. It's quite an experience to watch them take off from the hold too - and they tend not to keep you waiting very long.
Landing fees are another thing entirely. I think the fee at Coventry Flying School under tuition is £4 per landing (or approach if the pilot elects to go around). This is not good if you are doing a lot of circuit bashing - but we have arrangements with other fields at much better rates. It is true to say that if you fly from other less commercial fields, you are going to be paying less for landing fees which can certainly help the wallet. On the other hand, your landing fee gets you, amongst other things, a first class emergency service should the worst happen.
Having flown from both Leicester and Wellesbourne, I concur that they are both excellent airfields. Isn't it nice to be totally spoiled for choice!
