More Barton plans in the M.E.N

This from the Manchester Evening News on Sept 30th

Aerodrome 'may be new city airport'
Neal Keeling

BARTON aerodrome could be developed as a commercial airport within ten years.

Owners Peel Holdings are considering turning Britain's oldest municipal airfield into an alternative to Manchester Airport for business people heading for the north west.

There is speculation that Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond, who owns shares at Manchester United and substantial holdings at Glasgow Celtic Football Club, wants to turn the Salford aerodrome into a thriving small airport.

But the Manchester Evening News understands that Peel, which also owns the Trafford Centre, have their own ideas for the site.

Mr Desmond owns London City Airport and is said to have an eye on the Barton site. London City, which he acquired in 1995, is now extremely successful, fuelling speculation about his interest in Barton.

But the Manchester Ship Canal Company, a subsidiary of Peel, recently got approval from Salford council to replace an old hangar and shed at Barton with new facilities.

One source said: "Peel can see Barton being developed for business people wanting access to the regional centre. Providing the runway situation can be sorted out without intrusion on local residents, the city council would be encouraged by such a scheme. A concept of a mini-airport is attractive but it is unlikely to happen for 10 years.

"Peel already have expertise in operating John Lennon Airport at Liverpool and another at Doncaster. They are also doing some work at Sheffield City airport. They would not need a partnership with Mr Desmond - they are capable of developing it themselves."

Peel have already unveiled plans for Port Salford, a massive rail, road and water terminal which would be on the banks of the ship canal near Barton.

Peel acquired the aerodrome two years ago for about £1 million from Manchester council.
