Goodwood

Hi guys/gals.

I was just wondering how many people have experience of flying into Goodwood on a race/event day. Having never flown in into Goodwood at all I was wondering what the facilities are likely to be like on a busy day?

I know its PPR only and on their website they even state they will order a taxi for you as long as you radio it ahead so it all seems to be very friendly.

If I was thinking of flying in for an event would you suggest a quick jaunt over there on a quiet day first?

Let me know your thoughts.

I can't imagine that it would be much of a problem with a prior briefing call. I have only flown in to Goodwood on a quiet day and was impressed by the quality of the airfield. I would like to go to the Revival meeting in September. Even though I have a classic car, it is not old enough to be let in (annoyingly, they will let you in driving a rubbishy MG of any age, but not in a lovely 1970s Alfa). What about flying in? I gather from Evo that on the day they even make him hide his lovely classic Falconar, so presumably they won't allow in an aircraft which basically has a 1950s airframe design (think Emeraude) even though built in 1981.

Nothing that special: a 1977 Spider Veloce with the DOHC 2 litre engine and twin Dellortos. Rust being kept at bay at the moment. Which ones do you have?

Alfa Romeo GTV6 2.5 (fantastic engine horrendous bodyshell but partially renovated so looking lovely now if you ignore the hole under the clutch;-)

Alfa Romeo Spider 1.6 (1988)

Not "classics" just yet but great to drive and listen to (try explaining that to your other-half..)

Yesterday was the first day of the festival of speed, and the aerdrome was busy, but not totally packed out (the FISOs were getting a good work-out, but the volume of RT seemed no worse than Shoreham on a sunny weekend). The circuit looked a bit interesting, with lots of helicopters arriving and, when I got there, a mixture of light twins, a Hurricane and a flexwing microlight arriving in the fixed-wing circuit, but it's not beyond the average PPL. The organization on the ground seemed to be very efficient, and I think lifts were available over to the house for the FoS.

On a quiet day, Goodwood is very quiet. It would be an easy trial run for anybody who hasn't been there before, but it's not a demanding airfield to fly to even when busy.

I flew in there for the FOS last year on the Saturday. Got there early (about 8:30) and it was very quiet. Asked to park on Rwy 28, by the time we'd got out of the plane there was a man a car to take us over to the clubhouse. Paid out £14 and another car took us right into the FOS. Very good service for £14

Leaving was no problem, we could have got a lift back but decided to take the short walk. Booking out was over the radio and no delays departing.

Going again this year but on Sunday so I expect it will be a bit busier.

For the FOS and the Revival they will park you over the other side of the airfield (though if they think your aircraft is old enough and interesting enough they may park you nearer at the Revival) and transport is provided. For the horse racing it is not usually that busy - you don't even need to PPR unless you want to arrive/depart out of hours, this is when you need to get a taxi to the course.
