BRL - IIRC, ISTR and the like are good old internet abbreviations back from the pre-web days of Usenet and Gopher. Not this new-fangled mobile phone speak, m8, it's generally used by those of us sad enough to have been hanging around online for a rather long time.

(edit: I'm amazed that you haven't noticed it before. I mean, don't you read anything we write... )

Circuit Basher

As a techie (although not a telephone system expert), I cannot think that it is possible these days for a line to be 'held open' by the call initiator when the recipient of the call has terminated the call. ISTR that in the old days of mechanical Strowger exchanges, there were ways that the line could be captured and 'held' if the originator didn't replace the receiver correctly, but I've never come across an instance of this in one of the System X (digital) exchanges.
Not true. I regularly use this when receiving a call downstairs and need information from upstairs. Just replace the receiver and pick up on another extension - the caller will still be there. Well, the exchange is certainly able to deal with broadband, so it must be System X + ?. Call must be incoming, though.

PS. My witty signature never appears these days. BRL, any idea why not?

Over the last couple of weeks I've received 3 calls that, when answered, I am presented with a recorded message telling me that I'm the lucky winner of.... I've hung up by this time as usually am pee'd off at having to get out of bed to answer it. Point is that I suppose it does happen...

Ripline. The signature feature has been turned off by the site owners. Too many people were taking advantage of it and were placing links to commercial sites etc. Its a shame a few ruined it for us as there were some great ones knocking about.
