ICAO Telephony Designators ['Callsigns']

A colleague at work was asking today about a couple of callsigns that he'd heard in use around the LGW area and I have tried the CAA / AIS / ICAO Web sites to find out about them for him. I even searched PPRuNe under 'Callsigns' and found 659 posts where the word is mentioned, the ICAO Document reference is given, but couldn't find a live Web link to a copy of ICAO Document 8585 'Designators for Aircraft Operating Agencies, Aeronautical Authorities and Services'. Believe the latest edition is Edition No. 125 - July 2003.

I managed to find the AIC containing the application form for a designator, but not anything showing UK callsigns.

Anyone any ideas where I might find it on the Web, or is the only option to spend £84.00 on a copy (he's an OK sort of guy, but not £84.00 worth!! ). The specific callsigns he was asking about are 'SKYSURE' and 'GUARDIAN' - I thought one was associated with the UK Immigration Service, but am usually wrong on such things.

If there's no luck on this forum, I'll just have to go and ask the 'scope dopes' on ATC Issues Forum!! (only kidding, Chilli Monster / AlanM / ATCBabe / 10W and all the other fine controllers who look at this forum - you know I think you're great people!! )

This FAA site is probably as close as you'll come, but neither is listed.

Thumbs down

I tried clicking callsigns on this website but couldn't find 'SKYSURE' or 'GUARDIAN'.

Many thanks for that, Cahlibahn - not sure of the vintage of it, but there's one callsign I saw in there that I know refers to a UK school that went out of business 4 years ago!

Subscribing to ICAO 8585 is about the only way you'll get to see a full list of current callsigns.

SKYSURE, is likely to be a mishearing of SKYSHARE, which is the common callsign for Netjets, the fractional ownership firm. GUARDIAN sounds military to me, I don't have it listed in our (slightly old) copy of 8585

Not sure about "SkySure", but Guardian is probably JGN "Joint Guardian". These are (were) humanitarian flights to the former Jugoslavian states. Often C130s, but many other types were used.
