Emirates Manchester - Dubai Flight Route

Am flying Emirates from Manchester, England to Dubai, UAE and further onto to Kolkata, India.

Can anyone provide me with an indication of the usual flight routing(s) to give me an idea of where I will be flying over....

Cheers

Hi Northern Passenger. Your specific routing will change depending on a variety of factors (traffic, prevailing winds, politics, etc) but this route often flies to the south of Amsterdam, then over Prague and on towards the Black Sea. It typically leaves land near the Romanian town of Constanta (something I always notice because I went there on holiday as a ten year old!) before crossing Turkey and Iraq/Saudi Arabia (I'm pretty sure I've overflown Baghdad once or twice recently). Finally it will almost always fly over the Persian Gulf before arriving in Dubai. I've never flown to Kolkata so I can't comment on this leg.

The views of the mountains over Turkey/Northern Iraq are breathtaking if you fly on a clear day. Make sure you look out for them!

You can use the in flight entertainment moving maps to tell you where you are. And some EK planes have a downward looking camera which sometimes gives reasonable views of what's down there.

Definitely over the center of Baghdad, which on Saturdays flight was so brightly lit it took me a while to figure out it was Baghdad (we were also flying at 25,000 feet at that time). Quatar and Bahrain to your right and if it is a night flight expect 40 mins of circling over the gulf south of Bandar Abas till DXB ATC lets you in.

DXB to CCU you will fly north, Hug the coast with Iran, Cross over into Pakistan somewhere near karachi follow the trail up a bit into India Over jaipur, South of Delhi, Kanpur and onto Kolkatta.

On a night flight not much one can see below.

On a foot note, you will have one of the older 330 on the DXB-CCU route. Most uncomfortable seats ever............that is in Y....

@mutt

Yes it was at least 12000 lower than what one usually crosses over that area. That was one of the main reasons why it took me a while to figure out what we were over as it filled the window and one could actually see buildings rather than dots of lights. When I looked back at the IFE i noticed we were at 25000. By the time we came near Bahrain we were down to 17K and then were circling at 14K for a while 100 miles west of DXB.

In this age of minimum fuel, I'm surprised that they could come down that low so far away from DXB. Any possibility that it was an IFS glitch?

Northern Passenger
Out bound
Routes have been spelled out well by other posters generaly Amsterdam to Constanta and then Van and out over Iranian border and down to gulf near Abadan then down gulf to DXB and then circle !. I have done this route many times but have yet to fly over Iraq. Have not flown to Calcutta but have over flown on the way to HK so route is DXB Karachi then across central India I would think.

In bound
Same route back to DXB but have had many routes back from there to Europe. Southern route along gulf coast and out over Saudia Arabia , Syria , Lebanon and then up to Turkey and back on to outbond track. Other times same as out bound and once way up into Iran and Russian airspace ended up over Odessa. Also once down the Med and up over Italy. Once approaching UK either in as outbound or often over London and up to Man.

The comments on the view are correct, the mountains of Iran /Turkey are quite somthing, and if on northern route you may pass over Qushm Island which has a collapsed salt dome which you can clearly see. Would recommend L/H side view on return.

Have a good trip.

You often get a decent view of Najaf in Iraq on the way home if you are sat on the LHS of the plane.
Also at night you get good views of the flare offs from some of the oil wells in Saudi, Kuwait and Iraq dependent on route

@mutt,

No way to confirm that, however from the visual at 23:00 local the city did look a lot closer/larger than normal and that is why I got confused. I could actually make out individual buildings. Makes me believe the IFS was correct

You can find a visual map of the great circle route at
http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=MAN-DXB-CCU&DU=mi
As Anansis mentions, you won't fly the exact route, but this is likely to be a good approximation

On my last two departures from London Heathrow (on westerlies) to Dubai .....

One turned right on departure and routed overhead Clacton, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Black Sea, Northern Turkey, length of Iraq .....

The next turned left on departure and routed overhead Dover, Frankfurt, the Aegean, Northern Cyprus, Lebanon, and across Saudi.

Thanks All

Thanks all for your posts

Outbound flight leaves Manchester in the afternoon (A380 Left window seat). Flight to Kolkata (A330 Left window seat) is in the night 3am departure.

I have internal India flights and then back via Mumbai - Dubai A330 and A330 to Manchester.. I guess I will be too tired to look out of the window then :-)

Biz seats so the A330 should be okay as well as the A380.
