IREX Questions

Greetings all,

Just had my second go at the IREX and failed by 1 miserable question!!

But looking at my KDR there were a few errors which I apparantly got wrong but I was sure that I got right as well as one question to do with Night VFR recency which didn't have the correct answer. I know that you then have to choose the most correct answer so maybe those wiser and more knowledgeable than me can tell me what the most correct answer would be to the following question.

A pilot wishes to fly under Night VFR procedures on the last route segment to the destination. What recent experience must the pilot have to be able to do this?

A. One cross country flight over 100nm (or one hour) within the past 12 months

B. 3 take offs and landings and one cross country flight over 100nm (or one hour) within the past 12 months

C. 3 take offs and landings within the past 90 days

D. One take off and landing and one cross country flight over 100nm (or one hour) within the past 90 days.

I originally left this question before returning to it and spending a good 10mins trying to read and understand both the question and the answers. My understanding is that the answer would be:

One cross country flight over 100nm (or one hour) within the past 6 months and 3 take offs and landings within the past 90 days

Hence none of the options would apply and B would be the most correct. Right?

Like I said it was one mark and if I can get that mark somewhere I will be extremely happy.

One other question that I did want to ask the wise and esteemed was on ERC chart L7 at the intersection of routes G222 and A461 at the north west tip of Lake Eyer North there is a reporting point AGAGO. Traffic on what air route would report at AGAGO?? My answer was G222 as indicated by the arrows either side of the black triangle in the box. Could someone please explain to me why that is incorrect and what the correct answer would be, I shall be greatly appreciative.

Thanks in advance

Chin up, you'll get there.

My 2c follows

NGT VFR recency

If no pax, requires both 1 hr or 100 NM x-country in previous 12 months AND 1 t/off and landing in last 6 months. Answers A, B and C do not come within this criteria (in Answer B, there is no timeframe put on the 3 t/offs and landings), thus D is the only answer that meets the criteria.

Reporting Points

You've perhaps become a victim of the sloppy wording of the ERC Low Chart Legends and the AIP. AGOGO is compulsory for all ACFT on G222 in accordance with the arrows. However it is also a prescribed reporting point for ACFT with a TAS of <300 KT (i.e. all of the ACFT examples for the IREX would be <300 KT TAS), for other ACFT on request - it is treated as an open triangle symbol on route A461. If it was not a reporting point AT ALL for A461, then the route line for A461 would have taken a "squiggle" around it. See also the table on AIP ENR 1.1-37 and the wording of AIP ENR 19.1.1.

Hope this helps.

IMHO the IREX often tests "around the edges" and doesn't always adequately test and weight important core concepts.

Hey Notim,

Thanks for your reply, most helpful as to where I went wrong.

With regards to the Night VFR Recency question from memory it doesn't actually state whether it is with or without pax. I am 99% sure that it was in regard to a Charter Op with pax which would render all of the answers invalid.

If however I am wrong and it was with regards to non pax charters then yes I can see how I did get it wrong.

The Reporting Point question I can now see where I got it completely wrong. Thanks for that explanation.

I took great pleasuring in knowing that the areas I got wrong on the first exam were all answered correctly this time so I guess it is just a process of attrition.
