What's it like in Perth / Adastral
Just wondering if anyone has done some IFR at Perth, esp with Ad-Astral aviation.
I'm going down there in a couple of weeks for a renewal, and i have booked a flight in a Duchess on top, so i remember how to fly a twin before i go for the test . (Geez, 450 p/h airswitch, it better be a good duchess)
What's the wx like in June? How's Rottnest Isl, any tips or tricks for the flight

Dj Dave,
Generally you do the whole lot in the sim down there. The only flight component is the ILS, which takes all of about 5-10 minutes. Suggest you save your money and do a sim refresher or two instead.
And yes they are very good because they haven't failed me yet

Ad Astral Duchess
Did my initial and 2 of 4 renewals there, the most recent earlier this year. Duchess is has a good std fit autopilot,2 x VHF, 1 x HF, 1 x ILS, 2 x VOR, 2 x ADF, Trimble 2000 GPS (IFR), but no DME. They use GPS dist for arcs vor/dme etc.
Ad Astral offer a package for renewals that saves you alot of money if you are not current etc. All of the warm up and one or two of the renewal approaches are done on the sim, and if you handle that assymetric, then the duchess is a breeze. In my opinion even if you are not current in twins the bastard sim usually scares you enough to make the duchess easy, so an extra is a bit superfluous. There is no mucking around at this outfit and they will get you up to speed a quickly as possible
Did RTI NDB in a stiff breeze which makes you work during inbound tracking as it is a N/S teardrop (Wind W-S/W). Nothing really unusual about RTI just a std NDB with a fairly shallow descent (1900 over the top with 700 MDA 1.5 mins outbound from memory)
Wx in June can be anything from still sunny clear day to winter frontal strong wind, low cloud, showers etc. -pot luck really.

Have done about 5 renewals with Magilla and his crew and can also thoroughly endorse Ad Astral for IFR training. Until my last renewal it was done almoat entirely in the sim, and all that was done in the aircraft was an ILS. However on my last renewal (about 6 months ago) I had to do an RTI NDB with some assymetric work then an ILS back at PH. Apparently CASA had a different interpretation of the CAO. Don't know if this has chnaged again. Best to clarify this before you do the renewal.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Did my initial and 2 out of 3 renewals at Ad Astral.
I believe the reason for the RTI flight was that CASA were requiring to see the circling approach off the NPA in flight as part of the renewal. Anyway a quick zap over to Rotto and and an ILS back into Perth did not change the bottom line of the renewal. $450.00 I think.
There are those who both like and dislike AdAstral but for my money, you won't find a better IFR training establishment in Perth.
