Service Difficulty Reports
I must have missed the press release as recently I came across CASA's notice of their SDR survey. Too busy practicing for the aerobatic contest at Easter, I guess.
“ CASA is simply not getting as many Service Difficulty Reports as we should,” Mr McIntyre says. "The Australian aircraft fleet is aging, while aircraft numbers and hours flown are increasing, yet the total number of fault reports is falling. Perhaps people in the aviation industry are becoming reluctant or less rigorous in fault reporting and CASA needs to understand why and take action to address the situation."
Latest figures from AVSTATS show that GA hours have been steadily declining over the last few years. Does CASA have different statistics?
How many SDR's per 100,000 flying hours are we getting compared to the USA?
Here's one of the questions in the survey:
"The re-introduction of 3-yearly inspections would help to arrest the decline in SDRs."
I have the greatest respect for the diligence and competence of the local LAME's at Moorabbin that I see. The 3-yearly inspection is not the answer in my opinion.
You have until the end of the week to participate in this survey - please ensure that you complete it.
Read CAAP 51-1 before you do the survey. Operators should note that a malfunction is where a part fails to operate in the manner for which it was designed and (subject to certain exclusions) must be reported to CASA. There are additional requirements for major defects or damage.
