QF logic
Flew to Perth on QF581 Mon 21st. Quite a tasty lunch was served in EY with complimentary wine offered. I thought to myself competition is finally working. Came back to SYD last Saturday 26th on QF580, which was operated by the A330. Very comfortable flight, good lunch but lo and behold, $6 for a miniature bottle of wine. Asked the cabin crew for the reason, I was told that wine is complimentary Monday to Friday but you have to pay weekends! Must be QF's penny pinching attitude which is not going to save them much money methinks but upset the punters.
I think you will find you always had to pay for grog down the back. However, with the introduction of the City Flyer services, it is now complimentary on certain flights. Probably aimed towards the 'business people' who have found themselves kicked out of business class due to company cost constraints.
So from that point of view, you are now getting something that you didn't get before!

mate, try flying AA across the Atlantic...no grog at all in either direction, unless you want to pay US$5 for a can of beer- now that is tight!
You fly BMI on a 50min flight from London to Dublin and you get given 2 cans of beer free. You fly Aer Lingus and you get given a glass of OJ- I know who'll be getting my money when I fly in Europe!

Fly Cathay Pacific EY, any route and enjoy free beer, wine, champagne and all spirits. All served by lovely petite girls with a big smile!
Competition domestically in Australia is not with Cathay [free piss & food] - internationally QF has this as well!
In OZ it is Virgin who competes with NO free booze or food for fares sometimes above Qantas [just check the web!]
I don't see too many complaints about their food/beverage service because there ISN'T ONE!

I know on Dash Flights, grog is free after 4pm during the week, but the F/A's aren't allowed to make an announcement to that effect. If somebody asks, they get it, which of course starts the whole cabin asking.
About a year ago on the SYD-CB shuttle run (now city flyer), a survey was conducted with passengers as to whether they would prefer alcohol or tea/coffee served. Apparently alcohol won, and for a while, the tech crews had to carry a flask of coffee if they wanted one, as QF no longer stocked that flight with it.

As my original post refered to City Flyer QF581 SYD/PER and return QF580, I still can not understand why they offer free grog on weekdays but never on "Sunday" or Saturday. For more effective PR, I would advocate free beveridge service at weekends which would be a greater saving but seeing they offer it on weekdays, just how much more expense would it amount to if they offered it all week. After all, not everybody would ask for refills like I! Any sensible replies from QF? I used to work for them many years ago.

I dare say that they've found people drink 38 times as much on the weekends as opposed to during the week. Having to report to work after your flight or the next morning stops most people drinking lots

Try this website for size:

Has plenty of pics of QF & QF City FLyer cardboard boxes as well as DJ
When you look at what Xiamen Airlines offer you probably won't complain about Skippy again!

Have any of you tried the Canberra-Sydney shuttle on Rex????
I swear you'll never complain again.
Free champers, tea/coffee plus gourmet food on proper crockery.
Not bad for a 30min flight with prices starting below $100. It's a wonder more people don't use them, especially as they've now got an excellent lounge and FF program.
