Posing this as a question, seeing as I need advice...
Here is the scenario - a small club in a smallish city, membership declined to about 50 members, of whon less than 25% can be classed as active. Much of the club income is derived from scenic flights. Also on the same field are other ops - another scenic/charter/training company (allegedly sold to an overseas investor), a skydiving operator, a gliding club and the base for helicopter ops.
The club cannot find a permanent CFI/Ops manager to meet CAA criteria, so out of the blue comes a proposal to merge with a nearby club (80km away by road, 30 mins by air in a C152), allegedly booming (seeing as that city is growing exponentially) - there appears to be money to be made and little to lose. It all seems too good to be true!
Now, the club only manages to get a dozen or so members to a meeting, now there is a special AGM organised to discuss this (April 16th).
Firstly, is this scenario happening elsewhere in GA?
Should the clubs merge - does this ring the death bell for smaller clubs and is this a sign of the times?
Should the club seek to merge elsewhere, keeping things local?
Opinions please!
