Uk ATPL- NZ PPL?
I'll be heading over to New Zeland in a few days for a holiday and I'd like to hire an a/c whilst I'm out there to do a bit of sight seeing.
What are the procedures to convert a uk licence over to an NZ one? I hold a UK Atpl(A) and CPL(H) with an instructors ticket on both. What's the Heli flying like? It looks spectacular. Any suggestions of places to visit?
I'll be based in Auckland for a few days next week, what's the local GA scene like?
Thanks in advance and apologies if this has been done before.

SAS,
Check out the NZ CAA website www.caa.govt.nz and follow links for "Pilots" and "validation of foriegn licences".
Basically if you have a current ICAO license and medical you just need to complete a BFR with a B-Catergory Instructor and fill in some paperwork with the appropriate fee to get your license. Not overly worth it for just a "couple of days" but longer term it is.
Plenty of helos for hire at Ardmore (NZAR), Helifilte in Masterton can show you some good sights, but the best scenery is in the South Island. Mainly commerical operators in the best parts i.e. Queenstown and the Franz/Fox Glaciers but Christchurch Helicopters have a good rep. (They incidentally are part of the same group as Auckland Helicopters which have a site at NZAR)
Anyway NZ has the highest number of Helicopters per head of population in the world so you will have no trouble finding one to use.
NZAR is the busiest GA field in the country, plenty of aircraft for hire and schools willing to take your money. I recommend flying over the Coromandel Penisula on a you-beaut-day to places like Pauanui, Matarangi and Whitianga.
An alternative is North Shore (NZNE) Airfield about 15mins north of the Harbour bridge (in a car that is!). North Shore Aero Club and North Shore Helicopters are both busy training est.
Hope this helps
