Bugg*r/woomera

woomera;

Why can't we as Australians have an Australian "peculiar" icon of our own called "Bugg*ar"

I remind you I am responsible for the Bugg*r Australia movement and, like I warned you on D & G general aviation/AOPA thread, that I will (sorry, we will) stop at nothing until we get our just desserts (mango and ice cream would be nice),

and on a more serious note.

In the interim, a compromise could be reached by renaming an existing icon that truly reflects abandoned frustration and hopelessness in a discussion.

I guess even a Kiwi would understand, could you explain same to our other overseas bretheren.

You have not heard the end of this matter and I reiterate, (sorry, ask), how do you cut out newspaper print to paste it on pprune in a threatening manner?

Talking VOTE NO TO BUGG*R

Woomera....As a concerned Australian Citizen, I for one am firmly against the use of a Bugga icon on this BB.....We should exercise our freedom of action and speech and have this disgusting proposal put to bed once and for all.

As a brand new Grandfather , I refuse to allow the future generations of nasa(s) to be subjected to this horrendous use of foul and unconscionable language/signage, without the minimum of the Mother of All Battles.

Lightbulb

Like this axiom...

If ya right click the smiley (either one), then click "Properties" in the window that opens, you'll see a reference to the website belonging to one StopStart. He's got LOTS of smileys there - it's, ah, smiley heaven!

Talking Buggess?

Kaptin M: Sprichst Du Deutsch?

That looks suspiciously like a German 'SS'.

Don't mention the war!

Why, you started it! (Basil Fawlty circa 1974).

There really is nothing wrong with using the word bugg#r.

The federal court said it was ok after a set of Toyota commercials went to air.

Sure we all know what the dictionary states. In some countries bugg#r is thought of as a taboo word as when they use it they are referring to it's true meaning.

However when the word is used in Australia as slang we are in fact not referring to the dictionary meaning but to simply express our frustration when we stuff something up like a bad landing for example.

To describe for example if someone is stuffing about i.e. " Stop bugg#ring about" we are simply implying to them to stop wasting time. The word is basically part of our slang culture and has been so for many years that we as Australians know when and where to use the word and that in most instances it is describing our frustration or time wasting antics rather than describing sodomy.

So let's have a icon describing our actions or thoughts, providing it is not used in a derogatory way.

We are a world divided by a common language.

Words in common and accepted usage in one country are likely to get your head knocked off or worse in another.

The original usage of the word in question was indeed a description of one who comitted an unnatural form of intercourse.

It has however come to common useage in Oz in a much lighter form unrelated to it's original etymology and immortalised in that Oz motor car advertisement that I for one found hilarious.

Therefore, I am unable to argue against it's use (only) in D & G if it is found suitable for use on public TV in the appropriate context.

Having regard for the PPRuNe auto censor, the affectionate use of its Oz derivative "bugga" will be tolerated, provided only that it is used in the affectionate sense, ie say "G'day y'old bugga" or "bugga" as a display of despair or bewilderment.

It's use in any other form will attract the usual penalties.

I am not able to arrange a specific "icon" for its display as PPRuNe is a Global Forum and its use in other areas would almost certainly offend.

May I humbly suggest that we press the into action as the accepted OZ icon for "bugga"

I think it sorta captures the "feeling" don't you think.??

Woomera... I applaud a good and sensible decision in the localised toleration of "bugga", in context. I don't see a real need for a smiley to express an emotion that is already well catered for by use of the word itself. Just a pity that our good mate, the wizard of auz, can't use it in his signature, if he happens to stray outside of D+G...

Anyway, folks can use of any of the wide array of icons available on StopStart's site - or even those available here - to add reinforcement to the actual sentiment! Bugga!
