Upgrading to Grade 1
Am trying to work out the various requirements to upgrade from a Grade 2 Instructor Rating to a Grade 1 but having trouble working out what the regs actually mean.
CAO 40.1.7 Para 4.3(b) states that an applicant for a Grade 1 Instructor Rating(aeroplane)......" must have logged at least 750 hrs instructional experiance including 500 hrs flight time, in a registered aeroplane, instructing in sequences specific to the aeroplane syllabus";
Questions:
1, Do you have to log the 500 hrs instructional experiance AFTER you recieve your grade 2 rating?? Whats the registered/recognised aeroplane bit......are they talking about not in Ultralights etc??
2, What do they mean by "sequences specific to the aeroplane syllabus". Is only training en route to the GFPT, PPL CPL, IFR counted, is recurrent training, such as a session of circuits or stalling etc to someone who holds a PPL counted or not.
Any ideas guys??

A 1 No. Only the 12 month is after you get the G2.
Have a look at CAR 2 for the interpretations.
A 2 have a look at the Day VFR Syllabus, you will find what is covered. You will also find IFR is not there.
Also have a look at the test form, you might find that the ATO will ask you questions like these. Have you done the PMI exam. Do you have a recommendation from your CFI. I would suspect that you will not get a recommendation before the CFI has you jumping through all the hoops.

The Gr.1 automatically gives you IR instructing privileges so you may have to give a brief or lesson about it.
Also you gain Instructor training & junior instructor supervisory privileges so make sure you know what they can & can't do.
Ditto the potential to be a CFI so make sure you're familiar with that section of the CAO ie 80.xx (or is it 82.xx?)

CASA chopped out a lot of the flying school stuff that was in the cao's, and have cut and pasted it to the AOC.
Most flying schools have AOCs over 10 pages long because of the additional schedules. Most normally only display 2 or three pages in their ops manual and on the wall, but close inspection may say something like "Page 1 of 13". It will contain all the requirements for the CFI.

Didn't know CASA has done that. Knew it would happen eventually with the gradual removal of CAOs from the sytem.
In that case: Study the Ops manual for the school with whom you do the upgrade specifically the CFI responsibilities etc.
