Australian Instument Renewal
G'day All,
Is there anybody out there who can tell me how to get an Australian Command Instrument Rating renewed in the States? I am currently in the Caribbean so maybe somewhere in Florida or the Southern States would be the most convenient.
Any help much appreciated.

Time to see the Doc
I'm not even sure it's possible in the States (to renew a foreign certificate or rating). The FAA may issue you some sort of FAA Certificate based on your foreign certificate, but...
I'm not sure they have the jurisdiction to accomplish what you're asking, but...
here's the guy to ask:
Go to www.propilot.com
Click on Doc's FAR Forum Bulletin Board
The man is an expert on the FARs.
Good luck.

Topic copied to Dunnunda as there may be someone there who knows also.
I would suggest checking CASA's website on what they allow. They may well require that any training done is in a VH registered aircraft.
Or maybe it can be done in a sim but has to be with an Australian certificated Flight Instructor. The us instrument renewal requirements are significantly different then the Australian ones.
You should contact CASA

I don't think that CASA has even contemplated anyone doing tests outside Australia. There is nothing I could find written about it.
All tests require 24 Hour notice to CASA so they can do surveillance. I doubt whether they would go to the Caribbean or the US to do that.
The test has to be over a route acceptable to CASA or ATO and demonstrate proficiency in:
(a) knowledge of relevant orders and publications;
(b) flight planning;
(c) preparation for flight;
(d) altimetry, air traffic control, departure, en-route, arrival procedures;
(e) the manoeuvres and procedures associated with the operation of the category and type of aircraft and navigation aid procedures, as specified in subsection 2 of this Appendix; and
(f) identification of navigation aids by recognition of the Morse code identifiers.
Some of these are peculiar to Australia and probably could not be reproduced outside of Australia. Contact CASA, explain your circumstances and see what they can do for you. Check whether QANTAS has any pilots on overseas postings and find out how they renew their rating.

Capt IF Snailtrails used to encounter this problem. He was flying over seas on his validated Aus ATPL. Even though he'd do full simulator checks on one of Boeing's finest to keep his Australian licence valid he would have to run around in a VH rego'd Partenavia. He did this in Melbourne, Victoria.

I just did that very thing in a Baron a few days ago.
Terrifying!
(And so was the plane)
