OzExpat, try giving Jeppesen (Australia) a call in Melbourne, they should be able to give you a demo "JeppView" CD Rom that covers your area. The software is on the cd to print out the charts and it is a great service.

My own experience is that Jepp approach plates for major airports that have bad terrain around them have a great feature with colour coded terrain contours.

Hobart, Canberra, Townsville and Cairns charts show you enough terrain information to make you very conscious about where you are. Think how good the Morbid ILS from Kerema onwards would look with colour coded terrain contours.

As for the USAF 737, if they had used the issuing state's document, the accident would still have happened, Jepp doesn't modify critical data, they accept and print that which the regulator provides them with.

And yes, Jepp's DME/GPS Arrival plates have a fool proof presentation, with DAPs you usually need to put little diagonal arrows to clarify "after passing, descend to" as another Pruner has already mentioned.

Thumbs up

Top tip Mainframe, thanks. I've had the occasional contact with Jepp (ML) and should've thought of that for myself. Mind you, I'm not sure that all the contour information around Port Morbid, or anywhere else around this country, would be such a great idea.

It's daunting enough to look at them all when I'm working out the approaches. I can only imagine the "pause" it would give pilots to have the same info on their plates...

wiz ...

But you never know, I have been know to make mistakes...........
Yeah, but making the same mistake THREE times in the space of 3 days was a bit much mate!

Am I getting soft in my old age?

R-F-G: I give candidates a choice of Jepps or DAPS (to keep the playing field level). So far about 95% choose Jepps as their preferred document.

I gotta ask.....

If Airservices is so "safety of flight oriented" how come they keep "rationalising" safety oriented flight services into non-existance????

Almost by their own admission, Airservices are every bit the commercial entity that Jeppesen is. At least thats my take on it.

AIP Question

A quick question to those of you that use Jepps,

I completed my flight training only ever having had exposure to CAR's, CAO's, Jeppesen Airway Manual and AIP Charts. During this training, instructors mentioned something called AIC's and AIP SUPPS, and I could be ******ed if I could find the equivalent info in the Jepp Manuals. Since (to the best of my knowledge) you can only get the AIP Supps and AIC's with the AIP package (not including the internet), how do you get arround the particular problem of not being able to access this info.

The AIP Supps are a vital piece of information, especially up north where we get our fair share of military exercises and "trial airspace changes". Do companies provide you with this info (somehow in the lower rungs of GA I find this doubtful) or is there an easier alternative.

*Please note I am using the AIP now as I couldn't afford the renewal service (and have no need for the approach charts at the moment) and therfore am not aware of any changes to this situation*

AIP Supp/AIC

Strewth,

You can subscribe to an AIP Supp/AIC ammendment service through the publications centre, it's not too expensive.

I recall reading on PPRuNe some months ago that said docs are also available off the Web Site.

Strewth,

Aren't all companies who operate on an AOC required to keep an up-to-date library with all those documents? Just use theirs. I have Jepp's and you're right, there are no AIC's. I just peruse the companies AIC's every now and again looking for anything new.

As well as the DME/GPS Arr being in a much better format,
jepps have the better info on an ILS chart with regards to availability of HIAL ect, rather that having to pull out the AIP's and check ENR 1.5.

Even though we know that stuff off by heart!!!!

A fast and cheap way to get AIC and supps

When the head office notams or regional notams say a supp is effective then you just call up the briefing office and request the relevant details. It only cost 50 cents.

If you have NAIPS then you can use that for free.
